Had an interesting moment today. Ive been testing a yard sale axe thats perfectly profiled but dull as a butter knife. The previous owner had ALMOST hung it perfectly, but the wedging was meh... fast forward three days and I keep missing on a birch Im felling. Since that doesnt normally happen... I took a look at my axe and well... son off a birch tree. It took one gentle tug to pull the head the last inch off. Two lessons learned. Keep your axe sharp AND dont trust someone elses hang. Thankfully my CT tapped in to finish the job. Also profiled perfectly but with the sharp edge I went through the birch in half the time.

Edit 4?: Phone trouble fixed?

Yep, that wedge was WAY too thin. That CT will take care of just about anything you need it to. Good to have a backup!

Count your lucky stars it didn't fly off into the woods or through a window, and that pulling the haft was dead simple. At least now without muss or fuss you can re-fit it to your satisfaction. Carve the shoulder back another 1/4-3/8" so the protruding wood and wedge buy you an extra bit of insurance against having this happen again.

They stuck a metal cross wedge parallel to the wood wedge. Makes me wonder how they do such a good job hanging it then mess up on the wedge so badly. I mean they obliviously knew how to hang an axe, but now how to wedge it properly?

ETA: on a second thought, it looks like they used a wooden shim you get at hardware stores for putting in door frames.
