This is an older looking full sized head, and the only markings are these two, identical on both sides. MATOOL, MAXWELL something? It's a new mark to me.

Looks close to MAYDOLE, a hammer-maker from the 1800s. Perhaps a rare axe from his one-man shop in the village, which he reportedly had before he got famous for his hammers. Just a guess.

Maydole is a great fit. It's taking a bath right now, will post whole head pics after. The flour idea is good, we used to do the same with crayon and dice. I love finding obscure stuff, and this one is still in good enough condition to be re-handled and used. I'm betting forge welded, but the vinegar shall reveal all.

Here it is, I'm going with Maydole. Forge welded for sure, 3lbs 1oz. I have another similar, with a thicker bit and smaller poll. I wonder if they are worth anything, both are in nice enough shape to handle.

The second one is 2.8lbs. The only mark is a clear M and the beginning of a second letter.

You will all probably find it pretty cool that this was purchased from me by a Maydole.

That is cool. Relative to the maker?
That axe had a very long poll.

I don't want to ID the guy or make his purchases a public thing, and I can't even say if it is family, but the last name was Maydole and the eBay ID had the word hammers in it. Good enough for me.
