I'm new here, and wanted to post some axe heads I got today.

The bottom one is stamped W.Germany.
The top one has ridges formed in the head for the handle.
The 2nd from the top no idea, the 3rd one is a Kelly I think.

Oookkkkayyyyy........

To me, a picture like this is like showing me a picture of a wallet full of rubbers, who gives a flip unless you are using them?

I enjoyed the picture. Sure, it's soft core axe porn, but still axe porn nonetheless. Be sure to post some pics after they're cleaned up and hung. That's the hardcore stuff that really gets things going. Then show them in use to really push it over the edge.

Welcome to the axe forum.

Those all look to be good serviceable vintage axes. Those ridges in the eye of the top one are usually a good sign. Many like that were made by True Temper, though I've seen the ridges in Collins and Stiletto axes, too. And there may be other makers who used them.

If the W German axe is an Iltis it should have a beautiful ring like crystal to it when lightly tapped. That clear crisp sound (quite noticeable on an vintage HaGeWe German Iltis that I have) made me lose all interest in most domestic (and import) axes that just have a dull thud sound to them. Quality of the steel, quality of the forging, I dunno but they sharpen up and cut like nobody's business.

I have them in a bath now, and will clean them up some tonight.
I need to find some nice handles online next, and a sharpening stone.
Ill keep posting pics as they progress.

I need to find ...... a sharpening stone.
45 years ago Ontario Dept of Lands & Forests taught me to use an axe file. Nicholson makes them. Darn sight faster than a stone and much more polite than a grinder.

House handle seems to be the go to place for all things handle!

Keep us posted on the progress!

Danny... to Blade Forums.

Looks like you made a nice score on your axe heads. I can still remember when I got my first stash of axe heads. I was pretty thrilled with them
Looks like you are off to a good start. You'll find out that these are just the beginning to your collection. They are addicting. Keep us posted as you progress.

I don't and never have but that doesn't mean you can't. Whatever works in your case and for you! If you cut a perpendicular into the handle before hand, and use a chisel to slot/split the first wedge after its' install, it is not that difficult to drive another wedge across the grain. Too much like work, most of the time, but every now and again you find a head that seems to flare out slightly in both directions. Instead of wedges I'd like one day to see some version of tapered dowels for anchoring handles in heads.
