Hey guys! Its been a while since I've posted here but Ive got a few questions. My grandfather gave me this axe head that had broken off of a handle. After a few hours of work, i finally got the eye cleaned out. Grandpa had used washers for metal wedges.. haha. There are no markings on the axe head, but the cheeks look like they had red paint on them, and the butt "excuse my terminology" or poll was painted green from what i can tell. 7 inches from the butt to edge. Edge is 4 inches i think. Sort of heavy, i dont know the exact weight of the head though. He said it was about 20-30 years old.

To get the rust off, should i sand the head or just put it in vinegar? the eye is very rusty and i tried to clean it with a dremel but it didnt do much.

Sand the head with an angle grinder with a wire wheel on it.
as far as cleaning out the eye use a dowel with 50 - 60 grit sandpaper wrapped around it.

Are there ridges in the eye? And if the eye is clear enough, you dont need to sand it - unless there is obstruction. Any markings on the bottom side of the axe, say like a number?

Thanks!

There are ridges in the eye, im going to check the bottom side now.

It very well might be an old Kelly Woodslasher - ridges in eye and red paint was very common for them. If possible, lets see a pic of the eye.

after cleaning the head up a bit, i found some markings. on one side, it says "B35" thats all i can see for now.

yeah, its an old Woodslasher from Kelly

Awesome! Thanks a lot! I will try to post some pics of it after I finish cleaning up the head. The handle i bought at Lowes has a pretty crappy grain, so im not sure if i should use it..

Are there any other markings that are supposed to be on the head or were they just painted on when the axe was made?
