R-2, Robert Jr?My guess is that it was user done with a punch. Maybe ID'ing ownership or number in a sequence of a set of tools onsite or in shop.
Do you have any idea how long they manufactured that handle style? It seems like I have seen that handle in advertisements from the early 1900's.It has the head and handle shape of an old Fayette R Plumb anchor brand. If that's what it is the head with ring like crystal when lightly tapped with a metal object.
