I saw this today and wanted to buy it, but I thought that the price was crazy. He wouldn't budge much so I left it behind, but I'm curious as I can't find any others online or find it on Yesteryear Tools. Does it look familiar to anyone? It is a full sized Dayton.

Never heard of it but a hewing hatchet with that 'Black Navy' stamp just sold on the bay not long ago. It had what looked like an original handle with a partial label. Maybe somebody here can identify the brand by the label.

It's a house brand of Belknap Hardware and Mfg. Co., based upon this search result (only a snippet view, though):

Thanks, but there's not much to it. It's all in the search terms.

Suspected that it might be a hardware distributor's brand, so I went to google books and searched for:
"black navy" hardware
and found it on the first page of results.

I'm sharing my methods so that others can do likewise, and then "my work here will be done". ;)

I tried searching google books with slightly different terms and came up empty. Well played, Steve!
