Well... I'm just comfortable here and thought I'd share. This was actually practice for a more modern style wood axe that I will be making for a customer using a similar method but with mild steel and high carbon. But this was done with a big slab of wagon wheel wrought iron wrap welded around a drift I forged. The bit is 1084 and welded nicely. The shape is almost an exact copy of a Viking age bearded war axe... which were used on horseback and for throwing. And I must say.... I've been having a hell of a time throwing this thing. It is just lovely. A lot of the hawks I've made want to bounce out if thrown too hard... but this thing can be launched at full throttle and will bury itself deep into my red pines. This is the first time I've seen evidence that throwing axes could have been effectively used in combat.

The haft was carved from an osage orange stave.. with some natural features left in. This stave was split for bow making purposes and will be nearly impossible to break.

Hope you enjoy....

Lovely!

I have been throwing hawks (and axes) for over a decade. It is one of my most enjoyable past times!

Thanks for sharing!

Very, Very nice! I love bearded axes, and that Osage puts it over the top!

Very cool, I like the whole package! I also enjoy throwing hawks, and always throw full throttle, even if it doesn't stick, it's gonna hurt.(I usually throw a full tang hawk)

Axe in a knife forum?

Really good-looking axe in a knife forum!

Great job shaping this one, and the wrought texture is a big bonus.

that is a good looking axe.....what you say about the bow stave, definitely true, its some tough stuff they make bows from

also, do you make bows too?

thanks a lot folks. This is one I wish wouldn't have sold so quickly (although I will have it at the Janesville show for display). I really need one of these hanging by the woodstove.

I do (did) make bows... which was the avenue that got me into knife making. Now that I've finally finished my flintlock for hunting season.. I may grab a stave from the pile and start carving out a small osage selfbow for my son....

if you axe me, there is no problem posting axes in this knife forum.
appreciate you axing though.

Thanks again folks... very nice comments!

Lorien... Actually I didn't axe. But if you want me to axe you next time I will axe you. Would you like to be axed? :-) This is fun!

you don't haft a axe, but we could take a poll unless you wanna skip that bit. I'll be watching this thread like a hawk.

That is great looking, I love the natural Osage and wrought textures. Awesome work.
