I got this axe off of a gentleman from the warren pa area. As he was telling me tales of the plant, workers, etc. I asked him if he had seen many Sagers with Collins handles. He said no - this axe was manufactured just after the fact when Collins bought out Warren axe in 1955. He knew the guy that worked at the plant that gave it to him.

Weird that 10 years later it would be Mann Edge tool, that at one time would be producing Collins and still some Warren Axe products......supposedly according to the guy I talked to - there are or were advertisements in catalogs that showed Sagers with Collins handles, Collins products, Mann Edge products - then with a disclaimer all made by Mann Edge Tool Co Lewistown Pa.

Interesting piece of history. At least I think so. Grand scheme might not mean a thing.

yeah, that is very interesting...
ive always found it interesting how so many manufacturers bought each other out and still used the same names etc...
reading through the 'axe makers of north america' book can be a little confusing sometimes. trying to keep up with all the byouts and such...

thats a really nice axe and cool story as well...

Operator, as a complete noob, I think I speak on behalf of most axe enthusiasts when I say "thank you" for the history you bring to the pages...

I have a Sager with a Collins handle I found on E-Bay. I always just assumed it had been rehandled somewhere along the line and given it was going to be a user I didn't care. Interesting story.

Thanks Broady.

Great point. I have no idea if they all were that way - or if you could readily get Collins handles. Collins, of course with their volume, it made sense to have their own handle division, which I have found in the few I have that I like them very much. Could the Sagers be rehandled? Sure, anything is possible. I believe my is legit old school, based off of looking at it, how it fits perfectly into the eye, and the story that came with it. What does that mean? Probably nothin, but it keeps me thinking.

Great story and info Op!

I think an axe makers' family tree might be in order! Wheels are turning in my head.
