Hey all, I was wondering if anyone saw the axe in the opening scene of Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 1 (on last night). I'm having the damnedest time trying to figure out what pattern it is and if there are any current production axes like it. Sorry, I can't take a screenshot, but I can describe it as best I can. It looked to be on a 31" or 35" curved, doe foot handle. It was straight through the poll and the shoulder (no lug) and fairly narrow, but by no means as narrow as a hudson bay pattern. There was a pronounced flare after the shoulder ending with a relatively wide cheek/cutting edge. However, the flare from the shoulder to the cheek was straight, like an iroqouis pattern hawk, rather than curved, like a norse pattern hawk. And what's more, the pattern seemed to flare equally to the top and the bottom of the cheek, as opposed to flaring only toward the bottom of the cheek, like a hudson bay pattern. The closest thing I found that's similar to the axe is the Cold Steel Trail Boss, except without the little taper/step on the bottom flare.
Once again, sorry about not having a screenshot. If we can't nail it down in a few days, I'll try to take a picture of a screenshot on my TV, but I'm hoping someone saw it and might be able to identify the pattern and/or production equivalent for me. How is the quality of the Cold Steel Trail Boss, anyway? Handle seems a bit short -- has anyone ever hung a trail boss on a longer one?
Thanks in advance. I hope some of you pros are Hell on Wheel fans too so you know what I'm talking about -- great show, to boot!
