Axe pitting

I have two axe heads that have a lot of micro pitting because I'm not very smart and left them in vinegar and forgot about them. I was wondering the best way to remove the pitting without ruining the temper. Please help.

Sanding would be my choice. More than likely the vinegar revealed existing pits rather than made them.
