I bought an axe last night from a seller on Kijiji.
There were no photos in the ad, just a cut and pasted description from a website for a local place that sells these axes - two axes for sale, both gransfors, both in unused condition. A double bit throwing axe and a traditional forest axe. I've long wanted a forest axe. Sure, you can say that it'd be better to find an old american head and restore it, but after 4 or 5 years of garage sales and watching kijiji/craigslist, I haven't found all my perfect axes. So I made an offer and went to pick it up last night.
Seller hands me the axe, I must have looked puzzled. There was a little bit of surface rust on one side. But the reason I was puzzled was because it was a broad axe, not a forest axe. I was about to fess up and say that he could sell it for a lot more money to a different buyer, and I started to say "well it isn't exactly what I expected". Seller cuts me off and says "hey man, a deal is a deal, I know there is a bit of rust but it is in almost brand new condition".
So I bought an almost brand new gransfors broad axe for $80.
Would you have told him what he was selling?
My next problem is that I don't know what to do with it. Every other axe I own has been used for a specific purpose (or will be soon, for those winter acquisitions). I've cut some timbers with a granberg chainsaw mill, but I never expected to have a broad axe or to do any hewing. I know it is a quality piece, but it is pretty tough to justify as a wall hanger.
