Axe purchase - ethical kijiji question

I bought an axe last night from a seller on Kijiji.

There were no photos in the ad, just a cut and pasted description from a website for a local place that sells these axes - two axes for sale, both gransfors, both in unused condition. A double bit throwing axe and a traditional forest axe. I've long wanted a forest axe. Sure, you can say that it'd be better to find an old american head and restore it, but after 4 or 5 years of garage sales and watching kijiji/craigslist, I haven't found all my perfect axes. So I made an offer and went to pick it up last night.

Seller hands me the axe, I must have looked puzzled. There was a little bit of surface rust on one side. But the reason I was puzzled was because it was a broad axe, not a forest axe. I was about to fess up and say that he could sell it for a lot more money to a different buyer, and I started to say "well it isn't exactly what I expected". Seller cuts me off and says "hey man, a deal is a deal, I know there is a bit of rust but it is in almost brand new condition".

So I bought an almost brand new gransfors broad axe for $80.

Would you have told him what he was selling?

My next problem is that I don't know what to do with it. Every other axe I own has been used for a specific purpose (or will be soon, for those winter acquisitions). I've cut some timbers with a granberg chainsaw mill, but I never expected to have a broad axe or to do any hewing. I know it is a quality piece, but it is pretty tough to justify as a wall hanger.

Nice score. "A deal is a deal." He said it. Why even question it? I know I wouldn't, especially after his snide sounding comment.

BTW - I'd be interested in doubling your money....

Agreed!!! It's not your fault he didn't know what he was selling a quick google search would
Have told him the worth of the axe and the kind of axe it was.

Makes me suspicious that the items are 'hot'. Most folks know what they are selling and what they're worth.

I'd check with the local PD if there were any thefts of such an item reported.

I know of no one that would directly report a stolen axe. Cops these days (City of Ottawa and Prov of Ontario for sure) could care less about trinkets and baubles unless you foolishly mention loss of a 'firearm'. At that point they pull out all the stops and concentrate on trying to find a way of charging you with unsafe storage (must have been because you allowed it to be stolen). Anything less and they suggest to you to submit a Police report and then to scour pawnshops and on line sellers all by yourself.

I'm certain that this isn't a stolen axe. Everything about the exchange seemed to be on the up and up. Selling things of his dads - I got the feeling he was selling off a garage full of a lifetime of tools, and that he was tired of dealing with deal seekers on kijiji and it was something he would rather not be doing. I have texts and emails from his wife, his house is located in a semi affluent neighborhood fullbof families.

It looks like it was a simple matter of incorrectly identifying the axe, copy and paste from the LV website. The other axe is a double bit throwing axe, retails for 240 locally and they are asking 210 for it.

Grabbed a couple smart phone shots but its difficult to upload them and make this post on mobile.

Thats a very nice Ax!

Look at it this way, the Guy put an Ax up for sale and got his asking price
You got a nice Ax at a very good price, so everyone comes away happy

Ok, given the additional info I'd say you're ethically in the clear. Rest easy.
