Is there any reason not to put a longer handle on a camp axe?

In other words, if a camp axe head is all you need, and want to avoid the weight of a larger axe, but want the longer handle for safety, is this a viable solution?

Doesn't sound like too bad an idea. Personally, I find the length more an encumberance than weight, but that may not apply to you. I'm a firm beleiver that mass produced items are perfect for noone, just suitable for most people. I modify the hell out of anything I don't make myself to make them more personal anyway. On the jobsite, nobody ever picks up my tools because they think they're theirs.

In the neighboring thread on "Favorite Wilderness Axe", Jimbo said that he is trying just what you suggest. You might try contacting him.

I should be able to let you know how a longer handle on a light head works out - soon. If you are talking safety though, you are in the 36" handle length range and it's a lot of work to re-fit a handle made for a much larger head.

please come back and post the results. I've
thought about doing that to a couple I have,
as the standard 12" handle seems a bit short.
Also let us know what length you ended up with.

I'm hoping to get to it next week. This week has been so busy that my vacation next week is going to be my fun time for such playing around.
