Hello everyone,
this axe came from my parents neighbour who was cleaning out the shed and had no use for it. I cannot make out what the inscription on the back says however, the front has very deep stamping with "Made In Germany" "600". To my novice eye, it somewhat looks hand-forged? it was completely covered in rust and looked rather old. I have already put it through an electrolysis bath and I gave it a once-over with a wire brush.
I would appreciate any assistance in identifying this.
Thanks!

You're in luck, I am positive this is a Model 600 from Germany! Keep us updated on your progress of course !

Hi Brent, thanks for your reply! Would you know which company made the axe? I was under the assumption that the 600 was in reference to it's weight

He would not, I cannot recall him ever having a single proactive helpful thing to post. nnothing but snarky nose turned know it all remarks from somebody who doesn't seem to care about getting along and being productive.
Mr halverson here is trying to suggest that you don't need to know anything more about it because the country of origin and supposed model number should be good enough to satisfy your curiosity.

I would say you were right, and that 600 does refer to the weight.

I just went through some of ol Mr Halverson's posts. Seems like I've been blessed with meeting the town Grinch 😆
You have.
It doesn't seem he ever even tried to be a productive member, just came right in talking down to everyone.

Hopefully somebody knows who made your axe, I know basically nothing about German axes other than being able to spot the general pattern and the number on them is usually the weight.

Just a follow up, I've figured out part of what the brand name is on the back. The middle letters are definitely "emma" and there are two part letters on either side of this.

So the restoration continues. When I received the axe, parts of the blade over time had been ground down to a flat edge. This really doesn't suit the tough Australian timbers where I live as flat edges tend to wear out and get stuck in the cut very quickly.
So to remedy this, I used my belt sander in attempt to reprofile the edge to a convex type. I have never really tried reprofiling an edge before, however it seems to have turned out okay now being more convex than it was. The other interesting thing is that the steel stained and discoloured rapidly. I'm guessing it must be a high carbon steel.
Here are some photos of where I am up to.
I still need to work on the edge a little more to even it out and make it sharper. Most of the dings are gone now though so it is getting there.
The next step will be carving out a handle from some black wattle I have in the shed. This will be another first for me so I may still end up with a handle from Bunnings.
Enjoy the photos, I'll post more when I get a chance to keep at it.

Now I am up to making the handle. On a previous camp trip, I had chopped a log of black wattle which I'm using to make the haft.
I squared the log up then traced another handle I liked the shape of. I've now finished cutting it out with the band saw. The next step will be rounding out the handle and hanging the axe. Fingers crossed by the time I make my next post, the axe will be hung!.
