Axe Rust

I just bought both a GB and a Wetterlings axe. I intend on using them, but want to be certain I don't ruin them. I've read that you can fill a bucket with sand and dump a quart of motor oil in it. After each time you use the axe you should dip it in and out of the bucket which will clean it of debris and put oil on it.

Any suggestions for other methods?

Buy the way...in case you were wondering, the GB is the small splitting maul and the Wetterlings is the wildlife hatchet. I love them both, but a little plug for the Wetterlings...it came out of the sheath hair shaving sharp! I was impressed!

Good idea for shovels or spades- bad idea for a quality axe or hatchet.
How much trouble and time is it to just clean it off after use and apply a light wipe of oil once in awhile?
I actually cut meat or quarter game with my GB. No motor oil for me, thanks. I just keep it clean and use a few drops of olive oil. never had any rust problems and mine rides in a backpack from October to mid January.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a place in the garage that I split wood and its the only spot thats "mine". I think I might get some olive oil and a thick cotton cloth and soak the cloth in olive oil. That way when I'm done I can just swipe the axe on both sides and put it away.

Thanks for the input!
