Anyone recognize that partial stamp? The () letters are questionable as to what they are.

Also, this particular axe head wound up having a crack. It looks like a crack, but is barely a 1/16'' deep. Starts right in the middle of the poll on the left face, and extends almost to the end of the eye still in the middle of the face. Not sure if its trustworthy, but I really can't see it being much of a problem. Your opinion? Thanks.

I think your right now that I look at it more. So the only clue on this stamp then is it starts with N and ends with Cast Steel.

Awesome, more than I would have ever found. Also, can you guys give me another opinion? I found a axe today stamped:

Handmade

(E) & S MFG

The (E) is questionable, but the axe is also stamped 30 under the poll and 3 3/4 on the cheek. It is a Maine profile axe. Can this be... a Emerson and Stevens Mfg?

No particular order. And I may be wrong, it may be a Wedge profile instead of a Maine. ?

If it is an Emerson and Stevens piece, then it is a keeper. I am not familar with them using that handman name, however that doesnt mean a thing. The simple wedge shape though leans towards them, the fact being they hand hammered all their axes up until the bitter end in 1966-67

Operator is right, the E & S stamp and the wedge pattern screams emerson & stevens. Gorgeous axe. Definitely a maine wedge pattern.

Yessss, it took me two years, but I finally found an axe from my hometown. Thank you both for the information. I'm going to rehandle and sharpen this up once I finish removing rust. Don't think I want to restore the poll though, what do you guys think?

thanks for the pics...
ive always wanted and E & S...
if you find out 'for sure that its an emerson & stevens, i probably wouldnt touch the poll...

Yw, I have one more. The axe was scared, not having a good handle or being properly sharpened, so I gave it some company.
