I needed some place to make room to get my axes off the floor and work bench, etc. This is an old wooden box with some drawers that I used to have as a recovery gear box in a Land Cruiser. Just had to add some notched boards to hold the axes near the head and end of handle.

For transport, really something like you have there is very good mostly for taking in and out.
For storage I'm not so certain and you'll have to keep an eye out that you don't get a condensation building up. It depends on your conditions. You definitely wont want to keep sharpening stones in the same box.
If you alternate the direction of the heads one next to the other could you even fit more in? |You'd get a better weight distribution in any case.

Here axes are lying flat and stacked. I like burlap as packing.
