Well actually a hatchet.:D I showed my lovely Wife the Vaughan 1.25 lb hatchet on Amazon she ordered it yesterday. It arrived today . First I called Vaughan and asked what steel they use for their hatchets made in the U.S. they said 1080 . I worked on the edge a little it is definitely hard . I don't see it taking a lot to get where I want it . By the way my harbor freight 1 x 30 belt sander is money well spent

They make an excellent tool.
I've got their little Sub-Zero hatchet, and a riggers axe ( not to mention hammers ).
A few years ago on my recommendation my grandmother bought one of their hatchets marked for Craftsman, and it didn't take me long to file it to kindling splitting shape.
Her example was a bit mishaped on top, but functional none the less.

Btw was yours $32 on Amazon ?
Because they're only $22 directly from Vaughan, and the Craftsman branded version is only $17 at Sears.

I think it's fantastic that you can still get an American made high carbon steel hatchet. The value in these is tremendous.

Theres a decent number of half hatchets and the like, but definitely not to many camp / scout style hatchets.

Vaughan makes this one, the little sub zero, and a tubular steel handled one, there's the Estwing sportsman, Council tool makes one, Snow & Nealley makes one, there's the TT True American, and Barco industries makes a camp hatchet with the nail notch ( probably the only still made anywhere ) hunters hatchet without and a tubular steel handled one.
That's 10 carbon steel headed camp / scout style hatchets being produced today.

I'll have to find some more info about the Barco industries camp axe, because they actually look great in the stock photo and the price seems right.
