Axe Tomahawk Help Please

I am new to axes and tomahawks and seeking my first so if I sound ignorant it is accurate assessment.
I am thinking that it is possible to get one small enough to carry concealed. The thought would be the effectiveness they have, at least when they are 18" long. Are the smaller ones (say 9" length) still effective like the larger ones. Do they lose it when shortened. Are there any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations.
Perhaps what I am looking for does not exist due to leverage. I thought it best to ask before dropping money on what could be a wall hanger. Thanks.

Due to their size, and the legal ramifications, I think a 'hawk would be a poor concealed weapon.

You can conceal one in a shoulder rig under a jacket quite easily.

Possibly, but if you're going to carry a weapon, carry a gun, if you can.
I wouldn't care to explain why I was carrying a concealed axe to any of the cops around here.

panama,

You'll lose some leverage with a shorter haft. I think most people will tell you that a 14" haft is where you start to lose efficiency. I'd carry the longest one I could effectively conceal. A tomahawk would not be my first choice of weapon, but I don't know your circumstances and that may be your best option.

I would definitely check your state laws. In most places I would not wish to be caught carrying it. You will probably find yourself in serious hot water with a lot of explaining to do. Something around the 14 inch would give you both pretty good portability and still maintain good leverage. I would have to agree with some of the other posts on this and suggest that you really think thru the concealment idea. Most places even having a knife with a blade longer than four inches is a problem, never mind a hawk or axe.

....i think that presumes that you are not going to be modifying the head, brother tycho'.

chop the poll down, and grind the beard up to a shark tooth (as pictured, for example) on a humble Cold Steel Trail Hawk, and tell me that isn't a formidable, concealable weapon, easily mastered.

i doubt ya can, unless you are smurf-sized.

the physics will change the swing on the modified hawk, but it is still a hawk, and faster and deadlier than ever.

get a Survival Sheath Systems solution and never look back.

that's my advice.

I'm digging the shark tooth concept!

It wouldn't be the size so much you could conceal almost anything if you have a good rig. Why conceal a hawk? You could prolly carry a regular hawk in most places open and not get hassled get some looks but not hassled. Anywhere outside NYC and a few other major cities.

Indeed, you make an excellent point. I was assuming the head would remain unmodified...it never occurred to me to modify the steel! I like the "shark's tooth," but I'm not sure what its function is. Does it simply reduce weight, or mayhap it aids in hooking and trapping?
