Axe Transport Solved (Almost)

So I posted a while back trying to figure out the most efficient way to transport multiple axes, 12 minimum. Well, I got my tax return back and earmarked a portion of it for axes (because who here doesn't right?) I decided to splurge and try a 5.11 36" soft-sided rifle case. I can squeeze 4 single bits and a double bit in, which is about as much as I'd like to haul in one case due to weight. I like that I can mod the case out with MOLLE accessories for more flexible storage options for files, stones, knives, etc. If I like it, I'll probably end up getting another one.

I acknowledge that this is not the most thrifty, nor the most efficient for the number of axes I want to be able to carry. I decided to try it because it's very possible that I'll be doing more airline travel with axes this year, both domestically and internationally, and may need to check them with baggage rather than shipping them ahead. And if this doesn't work out, or I find a better solution, I'm sure I can find an alternate use for the rifle case.

Note: That Jersey in there needs a blade guard.

are you doing demo's or something to travel with so much equipment?

I've been doing axe restoration workshops for Best Made Co. for the past year or so. Usually I just toss the axes in a couple long cardboard boxes, but always wanted a more versatile solution. Ideally I'll ship axes to the workshop site, but if it's close enough to drive, tossing a rifle bag or two in the trunk will be much easier. We just got a request to do a workshop at a conference in Ireland this fall, which prompted me to look into an "airline approved" method of transport. Although, shipping axes ahead is still the easiest method.

How about one of these: http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1780HL

You can modify the pick-and-pull foam to suit your needs.

This one might work as well: http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1770

The Pelican case will be a lot more durable and secure than the soft rifle case you are using. Just a though if you are going to be traveling with more than five axes at a time.

I'd looked into Pelican cases, and from a durability standpoint there's no comparison. They are the best. But from a price and weight perspective they weren't quite what I was looking for. If I was doing more regular travel, more than a couple times a year, I'd consider them more, but they're just a little too expensive (around $300). They also weigh in at 20lbs and up, which means, with axes, they could be upwards of 40-50 lbs. That weight is the trade-off for supreme security and durability, but it doesn't shake out for me right now. If I had to transport a couple premo racing axes I'd be all over them. :)
