anyone know what brand axe was used by Jack Nicholson in this movie?
it was a large lumberjack's axe with a rockpick on the other side of the axe-blade and i really like it/
I've not seen The Shining in many years, but what you are describing sounds like what is called a pulaski, or sometimes a pulaski axe. There are many different brands of pulaski, not sure which one was used in the movie, or even if it was really a pulaski. A google search for pulaski axe will turn up many examples.

As noted above, fire rescue axe, or firemans's axe.
Back in the not-so-crazy days, it was not uncommon to have one or two such axes mounted under glass in hallways of larger buildings as well as a coil of medium size firehose connected to a water main. Breaking the glass to gain entry to these tools activated the building's local fire alarms.
I imagine the sight of a fireman's axe mounted on a wall in a public or semi-public building would cause severe apoplexy in most of the populace today. I ain't that old either.
