Axe vs Hatchet what do you mean?

I have seen MANY posts saying things like "I prefer batoning to an axe/or hatchet" (for other than safety purposes). Also, "the weight of an axe/hatchet is more than I want to carry". There are many variations. My question is, what is your definition/differentiation of hatchet/axe. I know mine is that a hatchet is smaller but that does not seem to be all inclusive of the opinions expressed. I didn't put this in the axe/hatchet forum because most references I come across come up in GD. Please say where you draw the line between and axe and a hatchet. Where do you draw the line, in size or weight, between the two. I'm not looking for the "correct" answer, just the opinion of those who speak of them for clarification of posts. Thank you. Hope this is not too vague. Sorry if this has been done before, I didn't see it.

Hatchets are a subset of axes and a good rule of thumb is that if you can use it one-handed and it has a handle 18" or less it's probably well within the bounds of what would be classically considered a hatchet of some kind.

My definition lies in the handle. An axe has a handle designed for use with two hands, a hatchet for one. They can have the same size of head, but the handle size and possibly design is where I put the line.

Axe me no questions and I will tell you no lies, but I generally throw my hawks into the target. It's pretty easy with a little practice.

I guess for me there are three catagories of axes that as I see them hatchets ... one handed use
small axes ... one or two hands about 18" handles
and full sized axes ...

Tomahawks are generally sub-2lb heads on proportionally long handles, and/or light axes designed for breaching or combat duties. If eyed, it is usually a slip-fit style in the modern context, although pretty much all period examples I've seen were wedged.
