Paul Krzyszkowski custom forged this tool and hung the handle at my request. I just received it Saturday. The head is 4140 tool steel, differentially heat treated and tempered, and just a bit under 2 pounds. The riveted handle is 28 1/4" long.
I was just thinking of a tool like this yesterday when I was dragging a cut log off of a trail I was clearing with my boys axe. But I'd like to see this done with traditional axe geometry - convex bit, raised centerline - and a traditional pickeroon hook. Total head weight 2-3/4 to 3 pounds. Boys axe plus hook.
I might try using my New York pattern ice axe in this role. The bit is kinda long but it may do.
@tanglediver That's a piece of art. I had a similar idea a couple years back for debarking and moving ties and slabs on our bandmill. Found an old double bit with one blade badly chipped, and cut a pick out of that side. Not pretty but it gets the job done.
