IMO the handle is too long.Like a knife the the smaller the blade the easier it isto control, too a point. My favorite is the Hudson Bay hatchet for what you are describing.//Wolf
I'm assuming that you mean you will be using it for firewood detail and are considering using it to construct a shelter of some kind. I don't know the type of environment you will be in, but if you have no other choice, it would probably work. I can't see using it for shelter, because a good survival and camp knife just might do a better job and anything heavier than splitting kindling, I think you might find the hammer lacking some.
I wanted to add that if you are in heavy timber or in an area where you'll need to get to the dry heartwood to start a fire, get yourself a decent hand axe like Gransfors Brux and SA Wetterling put out.
I second the grainsford brux I own that a hunter and a forest axe, I love em, they come razor sharp, they stay damn near and I just love there overall size.
Yes it will work, in the sense you can cut wood with it, but it won't do it very well, not cutting the wood, nor being fluid in it, nor in regards to edge holding. If it is all you have then you make due, but a decent small axe actually made to cut wood will be much more productive.
