Axes, who makes them?

I am wanting an axe.

A custom made to me, performance axe.

Shaped for combat, forged for utility.

Anyone know of those who do this????

No, I am not a renfair/SCA guy. But I am a bit romantically inclined towards axes in general, they make good weapons and even better tools.

Steve Schwarzer for pricey
Ed Caffery for less expensive.

Tim Potier from LA may be a bit pricey as well.
I hate to say it but I make one. Mine is made from a ball pein hammer head that I reforge out. S7 steel. Tough. I take them to 220 grit then cold blue them for a working finish. I do not make these for collecting but getting out and rough housing.
Several other people make them this way as it makes very tough hawk. Joe Flournoy-AR makes one like this in a different style his has a long sweeping spike on the back where mine has a short one. Probally cheaper than mine too.

I am looking for one, shaped like a 'hawk, but bigger, though not as big as a full axe.

A bit more beard than a 'hawk.

Full length handle.

So you would have lots of control, and a tool in the middle of the range.

Probably with a hammer back, spikes are cool, but not practical.

Mr. Poff
Then I would go with JerryO's guide above. Either one of those boys would fix you up right good.

Keep us informed on your quest for the perfect axe if you would, please? I'm thinking there may be a goodly number of us who would bite on such a useful tool (pun mostly intended

Ed said that he can do it, though it will probably be fall.

I am going to start drawing and measuring, and see what we can come up with.

Tomahawk shaped, with more beard and maybe just a little more curve....

But larger than a 'hawk, say 3/4 the size of an axe in the the head. But with a full size handle, fawn's foot handle.

That way it will be very responsive, in fact, with the long handle to balance it out I may even be able to use it one-handed.

The head will be wedge in the cross-section as opposed to the eye and blade approach of most 'hawks.

Since it is going to be a user, leave the scale on.....

This is gonna be cool.

Good choice, Marion! I'd be interested to hear how it comes out!

I was considering something along those lines as well. I wanted a copy of a "Francesca" (sp?) this was a old medieval design similar to what you are describing. Like a Hawk, but with a slightly bigger head. The Francesca however was ment to be a tool and a weapon. The centerline of the axe head was at around 120 degrees angle to the handle. It was shaped for throwing. The larger head meant it was more useful for chopping also.
