Has anyone played around with this micarta wedge poll idea?

looks neat! But honestly with such thin stock and low weight I feel like you may be better off with a big knife or machete. Of course I can't say for sure since I never have held one.

I saw this posted on another forum yesterday and said...

That is one of the dumbest ideas that I have ever seen. I guess if your stupid enough to consider buying one...Your probably stupid enough to pay $250 for it.

Now let me tell what I really think of this...Never mind, it just goes down hill from here on.

The sole reasoning behind this is to simply use cheaper, thin stock instead of:
A) using thicker, more expensive stock that might give you a functional poll (if you're a knife maker that just cuts and grinds from stock)
B) actually forging a proper axe

So yeah - aside from lack of skill and cost savings I see zero reason as to why this would be a practical idea. All the talk about weight savings is total rubbish: outside of self-defense applications, weight and a certain degree of bit thickness is a necessity for an axe to do its job. As trigga already stated, if you're keeping it ultralight, you're better off with a large knife.

That said, I guess props to the guy if he can manage to sell some of these. The materials would cost next to nothing and the level and skill and time invested compared to forging is laughable.

-not full tang
-I don't like the scales being that close the the head when splitting wood
-the micarta poll won't last very long I guess...

He sure doesn't offer any cost savings. He is saying he'll ask around $250.00 for it. I wish him good luck. PT Barnum said there's one born every minute.

Having made micarta wood splitting wedges before, I'd wager that the micarta pole should be durable enough for any wood splitting a hawk that small could realistically be used for. It's a pretty durable material.

Still, if he's charging that much and his only purpose for it was weight savings, he should have used titanium...

My concern wouldn't be the micarta itself taking damage so much as the fasteners.
