Started this ax yesterday, pretty much got the blade forged out and ran out of propane. Did alittle profile grinding on it and went back into the forge this morning for alittle more blade work and to drift the eye. I like this little forge so much I may end up painting it but most likly not. Did a couple bowies in it over the last few days. One 9" and the other 12". As the ax head sits right now its 4" point to point on the cutting edge.

Looks great Ray.. Hey good to see you at Oregon. Have you tried out any of that Maple Yet???

Chuck, It was good to see you also. I've been bouncing around so much since I've been home after the show I'm not even sure if I have used any of it yet. Pretty sure I took it out of my truck.

Are you going to Atlanta? Know I'll see you at Blade West.

Not going to Atlanta this year, I hope next year to test for MS. Definite on Blade West. I cut up some of that maple and it looks even better than in full board. Sent some off for stabilizing and dying. Going to try brown dye. Black looks good too.

As always, nice work Ray. (But you already know I like your stuff. :D ) Not only do I find the shape of this hawk head attractive, it's a bit longer along the edge than most of the hawks I recall seeing. Seems like most run in the 3-1/2" +/- range. I like that this one's a little wider than that.

What is the steel you're making this one from? Weight? Is that a flat hammer poll on it too?

Greg, I bought a 20' X 5/8 X 2" bar of 1065, enough for a couple axes and hawks. Someday I need to pick up a small scale to weight this stuff. I started out with a piece that was 4 1/2". It does have a slight hammer poll real simular to the third one from the left in the picture except on a larger scale. WG told me a larger version of number 3 would make a great hunter's ax and thats what I'm making now.

Whats the diamater of the forge Ray? Looks to be about six inches without the inswool.(four inch forge diamter) I like the size....go ahead and paint it man.

Mike, I never have measured it but while I was working on this ax it looked like I could make the cutting edge another inch wider so I'd say its real close to 5". My forge's first life was a 1 gallon propane bottle.

I'll just leave it a natural finish. As soon as I paint it it will lose value and someday I plan to take it on Antique's Road Show and I'd like to get full value for it. :D
