Axis auto lock-up question

I just received an auto bedlam and it has vertical play after being fired. However, if you move the blade up and down a couple times it gets better. I'm pretty sure it's because the axis bar is able to slide up more.

So my question is has anyone else had this problem, or does it just need to break in? My last auto bedlam didn't have this problem.

My SHOT show grip was perfect BTW.

If you slingshot the Axis bar with the blade open, does the vertical play disappear?

If so, it simply needs light lube on the Axis module and channels and time to wear in.

My 553 is having a stick channel even if lubed...just once maybe every 5-6 times, axis seem like freeze up after openning. Had to use a bit of thumb/index force to pull axis lock down and a metal to metal sound and then engaged....blade is brand new and only carry handful of time. Don't know if it is be audit need time to wear in/ lock channel.

I should be home around 1:00 I will test the slingshot method and see. It did look lubed when I looked at it though.

IMO sticking is not a bad thing with the Axis, especially if while stuck you have no perceptible vertical play. That to me says the parts are somewhat galling, making for a solid lockup that while somewhat more difficult to disengage, still can be done readily with one hand. Pivot adjustment with the Axis only impacts lateral play.

That said, light lube (I use CRK grease) on the Axis bar and channels assist with both break-in and decrease sticking.

If I slingshot the Axis with the blade open, it locks up really tight. No bladelpay and disengagement is hard. So I believe your correct. I think it just needs to wear in some. Plus they coat the liners "channel" area on this model. That may also contribute to the issue.

That's true. The black oxide coating on the liners will "smooth out" and become shiny over time. That's how my Bone Collectors have done.

thank you Professor....

One more question. I just purchase another BM (pre-owned) axis lock. This knife has been neglected....makes me so mad when i see owner mistreat their BM blade.

When I got the blade, I notice rust forming on the omega spring? I apply oil but the rust stains still exist...looks like dark brown after lube. any thing I should be aware of?

It breaking in the future. I have owned Axis lock knives for 15+ years, and had two break. Both were over a decade ago. You could always send it to benchmade for new ones, but even if one goes your knife will be fine until you or Benchmade fix it.

I'd send it in for a bit of a refurb, noting the visibly rusty Omega springs. My guess is it's only surface rust, and could be cleaned off and protected with some CLP lube, but the trick is getting to them without voiding your warranty ;).

Comments; with autos it's common to have both side to side and radial play. Too much and that might need adjustment. As for the pre-owned Axis lock based knife, send it in...Benchmade loves this kind of work and will make it right for you. (And often do more than just replace the springs...) One caveat comes to mind: When shipping our knives up for servicing, please leave the original box and paperwork home...they won't return those, the knife will come back in a gray 'repair' box. For questions, please call them at 800-800-7427.

Thanks, jkarp. I know there is going to be a little play in the Auto knives. This is excessive, but honestly I just think it needs to break in.

Thanks
