AXIS bar moves all the way forward creating play

I have a Benchmade Rift with the AXIS lock. The lock bar is traveling all the way forward in its 'slot' so that it allows the blade to have a tiny amount of vertical play.

I have tried to rotate the stop pin but it does not seem to want to rotate. Does anyone know if the stop pin has a flat so that it only fits into the liners one way? I can see where the pin has is silver now although it doesn't really look deformed. I figured I would ask before any further disassembly.

Any other suggestions for a fix other than sending it off and being without it for a month?

Thanks!

The stop pin just spins. Mine's really loose. Does it travel towards the blade or towards the butt of the knife (axis bar)?

Fix it under warranty, or attempt to fix it and void warranty....hmmm tough choice.

Send it in..
Every model I owned had atleast a mm of wear room even after daily use.. and beating..
Get it replaced/repaired..

Send it in, taking it apart voids the warranty. Some stop pins have a flat side and some don't and you can't be sure. Which model is this?

This is why I don't lik axis locks. They travel closer to the pivot during wear. This weakens the lock.

That's one of the reasons I do like them.

You only need movement enough to cover the axis lock pin. Any more is good for self adjusting to reduce bladeplay but detrimental to strength. If the locking mechanism is placed on the blade-side (from pivot pin) instead of the handle-end then it'll avoid this detrimental effect.

To be frank I like my rukus and 710 but in the case of my 710 my repeated opening and closing (habit... It's fun you know :)) the axis bar is now traveled pretty far. I know in the future if I continue with my habit then I'll have the same problem as the original poster.

Grab a hold of both sides of the axis bar (release buttons) and rotate the bar 1/8th of a turn. Then again. Then again. Give it a try, it solved the blade-play problems on my 730, so maybe it'll work for you.

I carry an Axis Lock pretty much every day, but can't imagine that I'll wear any of them out in my lifetime.

It's good to feel that way, confidence is just as important as performance for me. A good blade must be backed by it's user's confidence is what I mentioned in another thread.

It's like how I feel with Cold Steel (or it may not be depending on point of view of course), I am very confident with my Black Rhino and Recon 1 but some wouldn't trust them even if they are the last blades on earth just cause of the name/brand/hype/Lynn or cause of the Aus-8a.

While I have some issues with this lock, I would still choose it over liner locks and over most other brands just because Benchmade makes great and consistent quality products. I'm planning to machine my own Axis lock bar for my 710 (I can't send it to Benchmade, I'm in Malaysia :)) outta good quality stainless steel. That'll solve my problem cause under inspection I saw that it's my Axis lock cylindrical bar that is worn.

PS: I twisted my Axis bar already. I just can't stop opening and closing my 710, Damn addictive locking sound/feel. :p

I have a 525 that had some play. Slipped a piece of thin metal tubing over the stop pin (exact fit over the stop pin) and now it's tight and right! So, if you want, you can do it. Just need the right size tubing. And no, I don't know what size that is.
