How do the Benchmade AXIS knives close? Do they have a locking liner, or is there a button or lockback spine.... how would I close one?

Well, after you look at the BM site -

That button you see is the lock-bar - it's dumb-bell shaped.

The lock-bar locks the blade open and holds it closed (not locked closed, a closed bias).

If your into cars, think of the back of the blade as a cam (it acts as one). The lock-bar rides the cam as you open it, then in the fully opened position the bar rests on a flat (that can be modelled on a self-locking thread or wedge) - the bar is stationary until you manually retract it away from the "cam" to allow closing.

The concept wasn't new, but its application to knives was.

The button (actually more of a bar that goes straight through from side to side) slides back and forth. Pull the button back toward the butt of the knife to release the lock. As the blade opens, the button moves back slightly, then clicks forward when the lock engages. It's held under tension by two small omega shaped springs.

It IS very easy to open and close an Axis lock!! I can do it easily left & right handed.
