im thinking of buying a benchmade,

apparition,

mini skirmish

or pe satin presisio. what do you reckon, the lowdown on each knife and also, how does the axis lock work?is the pin/ball thing loose, spring loaded or just well fitted so as to be a tight solid fit? and can it lock the blade closed,oh and am i right im thinking that the presidis handle has a blueish purple tint?

please dont just cry: "AXIS ALL THE WAY" cos i may buy two or three knives.

maybe a paramilitary or a blue yojimbo but im probably gonna get 2 benchmades if possible.

those 3 are my favorites.

i love the mini skirmish, but prefer those with the dots on them like the full size skirmish.

however i like the apparitons blade, ao function and think it looks good .

plus the skirmish is very much hollow ground and curvy and i like flat ground warncliffs. i know the apparition isnt either of those things but its flat and straight more than the skirmish is.

i do like the skirmishes looks and fittings though. plus its s30v. sowhat do you reckon?

I don't have a skirmish, but I do have a griptilian with the axis lock. It is a spring loaded bar that moves in place to lock the blade open by way of a small blade shelf. It does not lock the blade closed. Mine locks up solid, but I would like to see the lock bar engage more of the blade shelf. It is no fixed blade knife, but "may" be more solid than a liner. The lock can be pulled back with the thumb and forefinger and the blade flipped out. This "feature" technically makes it (and all knives with an axis lock) a gravity knife.

I also have the apparition. I love that knife, but cannot bring myself to take it out of it's little black bag. The mechanism is simpler than the axis, and the liner engages the blade fully even when opened super slowly. I would call the apparition blade a modified wharcliff. I don't use my knives as axes, prybars, or screwdrives, so I don't see what the deal is with liner lock failures. The axis lock, because of the limited engagement, looks less secure to me. Your results may vary.

s30v is supposed to be great steel, but I have recently read some reports of blade edges chipping out under light useage and even sharpening. I haven't read any firm causes, however.

That being said, I'm carrying a kershaw whirlwind in 440a right now. Probably my favorite knife.

Don't have an Apparition, but I do find the new micarta handled versions attractive in a "gents" knife way.

I have a couple of the full size Skirmish knives. I find one gets a bit of blade slop when the lock area gets dirty and it has minor "feel it with your finger nail" chipping. I've used this knife reasonably hard, I'd say. The blade profile isn't a super slicer due to its thickness, but it is good for most chores I perform with a knife. Really like the handle profile (why I have two).

Handled the Presideo. Liked the blade profile, but I'm not a fan of metal handles (except frame locks). Sorta felt like a mildly curved 710 in my hand.

I'd give the axis lock a lead against the frame lock, if for nothing else that in more ambidextrous.

I recently purchased a Benchmade 551 Griptilian (my first name-brand folder, other than my SAK). Personally, it feels less secure than a lockback, and more secure than a liner. But I do agree with the review on equipped.org, in that you can close it without putting your fingers in the way of the blade, something you can't do with a liner or lockback.

The Skirmish is flat ground, not hallow ground. I think you are confusing the shape of the edge (which is a recurve) with the type of primary grind.

hlee, I think you stated it best as I agree they are more solid than most liner locks. I also think you are correct by stateing they are gravity knives, therefore check their legal status in your area.

People, Dantheman123 is no longer with us! He can't hear you anymore.

StandOnGuard resurrected this thread with his opinion on the Axis lock.

IMO, the Axis is as secure as a lockback; and in fact more secure in many ways because the palm of my hand cannot accidentally disengage the lock when white knuckling the handle. Technically, both types of locks function near the same way; with a pin for the Axis instead of a lock bar on a lockback.

Both outdo a liner lock as far as security is concerned!

Here's good page about axis lock: http://www.equipped.org/axis.htm

Anyone could help me find some pages talking about folder knife locks? I wanna know everything about them. Axis lock, compression lock, ball bearing lock, frame lock... I have googled many times but got no luck.

Yeah, I just noticed that this was a dead thread that was necro'd for some reason...
