Axis Lock Clicking Noise

A lot of people on this forum recommend the Benchmade 710, so I decided to go ahead and try it out for myself.

When I got my new 710-2, I immediately noticed that the blade was slight bent, but enough that it would scrape against the liners when opened with my left hand. I contacted Benchmade, and they replaced and centered my blade for free. I just got it back today. Thank you Benchmade!

Well, I've been playing with my blade, and I've noticed something that kind of bothers me. When I open the blade, something in the axis lock makes this annoying clicking noise. I don't know whether its the springs or the bar or what, and I can't figure out how to stop it. I should note that when I open the knife while resting my finger on the lock bar, the knife does not make this noise. Can any of you tell me what's wrong?

I'm hesitant to call BM again because I haven't had the knife long because I sent it off the BM for the bent blade problem almost as soon as I got it.

Here's a video where I show the sound.

Just got out my 940, and it does the same thing. I'd never noticed it until I read your post though, I'd say don't worry about it.

I have two brand new benchmades. I did not notice it until you brought it up, but mine do the same. I also have a user benchmade that does not do it. I would say that it is not a defect and it is just the nature of it. It will probably subside with use.
Good luck

Thanks. Misery loves company.

I wouldn't have noticed it either if my Griptilian (which I play with a LOT) hadn't been absolutely silent.

That's odd. Perhaps one of the omega springs was not put back in quite right and is hitting the scale or liner? I'm only guessing here but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in. Does it inhibit function at all?

Nope everything works fine as far as I can tell. Now whether its the spring rubbing against something which will eventually shorten the life of them, I can't say.

Also, I don't know whether this problem existed before I sent my knife is because I never really played with it until today.

Some of my 940's have made this slight noise. Some do some don't. Id say It's nothing to worry about.

The clicking is normal. It's the Axis bar defeating the blade detent and slamming against the top of the Axis cutout slots in the liners. All of my Axis locking knives do this, just some more pronounced than others.

I have predominantly carried a Benchmade with an axis lock since 2003 and never noticed a "click" before, so I just checked the 806BK-1101 that I have in my pocket, and it has a slight click right when the blade opens and at the same point when it closes. It isn't loud and I held it up to my ear to check it, so I assume a "click" is normal when opening (I never noticed it before this test).

I did buy a used 710 LE that the previous owner had swapped scales on and then swapped them back, and it rattled around the axis lock area when closed. I took off the scales and though I couldn't tell if anything was wrong, I sent it into Benchmade anyway and they repladed one of the omega springs and the problem was fixed when I got it back. Benchmade repaired it for free. Great customer service - If it bothers you or you think something may be broken, I would send it in to be checked out.

Nice to see you over here my friend.

You're talking about is the lock engaging at the top. This is a very different noise. I just checked all my bemchmades. my 710, 940 and my WARN Barrage. Makes this noise when you open them slow enough, But if you open it too slow (like really trying to see what it going on) is doesn't do it. When done at a speed when you can hear it. It happens when the lock bar is at it's lowest in the slot. It is hardly something I'd call loud. I never noticed because I flick them out. Or in case of the WARN, it's assisted. So 3 out of 8 do it.

At some point speed in the motion the pin or spring moving makes a slight click.

Flick the blade out quicker! :P

I'd still put the 710's lockup against against the Adamas's. Which makes no noise until the lock, locks upward.

Nope, I'm talking about what you're talking about. When the Axis bar defeats the blade detent (tang hook), deployed either fast or slow, there is an audible click. In my experience its always there, just some models more audible than others. I hear it on my Adamas.

The noise gets louder the faster I open it, so it's worst when I flick it open.

Say this is my knife's lock (0-----) with the blade facing to the left and the 0 the lock bar.
The noise doesn't happen when the bar is all the way pushed back like this (-----0)
It happens when the lock is like this (----0-).

Thanks for your responses everyone. I think the best move would be to wait until I send in my knife for something else and get this checked out at the same time.

Hey Joe - Good to see you.:)

On the subject of the OP's question..I checked my 806 D2 a minute ago, and it makes the same "clicking" noise as the 806-1101, so I suspect what I am hearing is normal.

On my 710 the Axis bar presses against the area where the tang and blade form up at about the point you're describing.

One click to defeat the detent, one when the spring-powered metal bar is propelled into three other pieces of metal when the blade locks up again.

Wouldn't the point where it defeats the detent be when the bar is pushed the farthest back at the crest on the tang? (----0)

I looked very carefully, and my 710 clicks just before that point going out and coming back in.

At this point, I've used it quite a bit so I'm not really worried about it breaking on me so much as I am curious about why this noise exists. Thanks for chiming in!
