My axis locks include: 720...806...940...551. Can you take these apart for cleaning(pocket lint, mostly) without springs hitting you in the face or shooting across the room? And I know it technically voids the warrenty, but if I'm able to reassemble them correctly....how will they know?

Here's one way of stripping and reassembling the Grip:

The method is pretty much the same for an Osborne 94*.

On some knives there isn't the cut out below the Axis slot that allows you to drop the Axis bar out intact. On those knives it is necessary to unscrew the two halves of the Axis stud, enabling the separating of the two liners.

It's not hard. Once you take the scales off the omega springs can be removed without a problem. However, I have never needed to use anything besides hot running water, some soap, and maybe a q-tip to clean a knife.

The Omega springs won't shoot across the room when you disassemble the knife. Just pick them out carefully. These knives are pretty easy to disassemble/reassemble, one of the reasons why I like the axis lock so much.

I've just checked my knives. The 720 doesn't have the enlarged cut out, so the Axis bar/stud would have to be separated. I'm not sure of the correct tool to do that without damaging it.

The 551 and 940 do have the enlarged hole, and my 805 does - so the 806 should.

I used two sets of pliers to take the lock bar apart. I padded the jaws with some really thin leather so not to mar the lock and it worked out great. When you do take it apart, the lock bar, the crowns simply unscrew from the bar. Really easy to d, just take your time.:)

I consider myself a mediocre mechanic at best.

I find the Axis knives are easy to assemble/disassemble.

Go for it.

I took my 950 Rift apart as soon as I got it. It wasn't hard but there are a lot of knife designs that are easier to take apart.

Word on the BMF is that recent 710s are the same - need tools to disassemble the Axis bar.

If I'm not mistaken, the 710 and the 720 were the first axis locks. So BM prolly tweaked the design for ease of assembly.
