Axis lock flipper

I was playing with my RAM and my Griptilian and thought the Grip would make a great flipper for the same reason the RAM does- the lock would preload the flipper and you'd get that same nice quick action. I looked closer at the Grip to make sure I couldn't see any reason the Axis lock would keep a flipper extension from being possible and didn't see anything, so I went to Benchmade's site to look for a flipper.

No flippers! Does anyone know why? or of an Axis lock flipper I missed? I would love a flipper Grip and I'd bet big money I'm not the only one.

No flippers. why, I dunno.

I've played with a few flippers, they did nothing for me, I'm a thumb stud or wrist user.

I think there is no place for flipper in knife with axis lock, it would have to be exactly where the axis moves.

I think it all revolves around the timeless problem of adjusting to change. The flipper is an excellent mechanism IMO. I would like to see a BM Axis folder that used the flipper exclusively.

Flippers don't seem to be Spyderco's type. They stick to holes pretty much. That said, a Manix 2 with a flipper would be interesting. It could go at the finger guard...would fit quite well.

The way I see it is Spyderco using the holes and a flipper tang together much like other knives (most knives) utilizing thumbstuds and flippers together.

Where would this "flipper" go on an Axis lock knife (or CBL knife for that matter)?

Might as well ask of a flipper lockback.

Where else would it go? It goes where flipper tangs go, in the "choil" area. The idea is not inconceivable, unless my understanding of both locking mechanisms is flawed.

Would it be overkill? Probably. It still holds appeal to some of us, however.

Draw the locks out.

The Axis bar would have to ride the "flipper", with a resultant long bar movement and spring movement. There goes that smooth movement the Axis-lock is known for.

OR

You could put a "flipper" further away from the pivot, outside the lock area - awkward at best. One reason I dislike the "wave" on Spyderco's is the distance from the pivot. Kills edge length, too.

OR

You could just move the lock so the lock doesn't ride the blade tang. This would affect lock manipulation.

Conceiving and making disireable are two different things.

I see.

I suppose the same drawbacks would spring from a cbbl, correct?

Hmmm, I suppose the bolt action lock might work, but again, we'd run into the problem of lock placement.

I see.

Based on my Manix 2 and P'Kal, the CBL appears to be more limited than the Axis. There is that big chunk of steel that acts not only as part of the lock, but also as the back-spacer of the scales.

Not just a couple of slots, springs, and a bar to be designed around.

What about the Lee William's Ener-G style flipper? The "flipper" is separate from the tang of the knife and it rotates on its own axis. I could see something like this working smoothly with the Axis lock.

Have you taken a look at the SOG Vulcan series? It has a flipper and an Arc-lock, which is basically the same as an Axis lock, only that it moves in an arc and not in a slot..

Have one?

I think they made a grooved tang to clear the lock, like you see in some center scale positioned plunger locks in automatic knives.

Seems Cold Steel may have been onto something in their modded Axis lock. I don't think Benchmade would like that.

No I don' t have one, but I have handled one at a local knife shop some time ago and was pretty happy with the quality on the knife. It' s kind of expensive for the materials you get, though.

When I look at the back of my Grip there seems to be plenty of space for a flipper behind the Axis lock. I'll admit to not being sure how it would look when open, but I would think it could be done. I'll have to check out the SOG.

I think an issue may what one envisions to be a "flipper".

Expanding my vision a bit, via the Onslaught, I see you could put one of the pillar like "flippers" on. I saw that on some knife, a Camilus? Still don't like the distance from the pivot pin, though.
