Axis Lock issues

I finally broke down and bought a 940. I've had it 2 weeks and its developed lock wobble when the blade is closed, it's so bad that the blade scrapes the side of the handle. It also has slight wobble when locked open. I adjusted the pivot and the only way I can get it to not wobble is if the pivot is all the way tightened and the blade doesn't move. Looking for suggestions before I send it back.

I'd bet you've got some grit in there. If you're up to it, I would take it apart and clean it piece by piece and put it back together.

If you're not confident with that approach, loosen the pivot until it has a lot of play and hose it out with Break Free, WD-40, canned air; just try and blast everything in there out. Tighten back up and dry it up and see how it behaves.

If you take it apart and can't put it together, BM charges reassembly fee, but will put it right.

I had a mini AFCK that would not both pivot and lock well. BM replaced the locking liner side of the knife and it worked fine again.

Yup. Take it apart and clean it. When you are tightening the pivot, the tiniest increments of a turn makes a BIG difference. Once it is close to tight, go a small (like 1/16 of a revolution) increment at a time until your hit the money spot.

Those pivots are really sensitive. Before you take it apart, make sure you aren't over tightening and under tightening it.

I had the same issue with a mini grip I got to replace one I sold. I tried everything and it was never right. I sent it to Benchmade and I'm not sure if they fixed it or replaced it (since it was brand new) and it was all good when I got it back. It didn't take that long, so if you decide to go that route, you know you'll be getting it back fixed. A 940 isn't cheap so I'd send it back and let them take a look at it....unless you want to practice taking it apart.

I think OP means there is blade play? Not sure what lock wobble is or if it's a different problem

I've had my 940-2 for a year and even though it is in my rotation, it doesn't amount to a lot of actual use. For the first few months it was a bear to get it to drop smoothly without blade play (believe me I tried), and then (seemingly) overnight, it drops smoothly and no blade play and has been that way since January or so. Even the slightly off center issue seems to have resolved itself.

I would disassemble the pivot and clean.
Re-assemble the pivot.
Loosen all the screws (including clip screws).
Gently snug down on the pivot screw (two finger tight).
Observe blade, it should be centered.
If not, move/flex opposing scales in opposing directions until blade is centered.
Tighten screws one at a time while watching the position of the blade at the same time. If you find a problem screw (one that when tightened throws the blade centering off) leave it loose and continue on tightening the remaining screws using the same process. Tighten any problem screws last.
Adjust pivot screw to your liking.

Thank you for sharing and I am sorry you are having issues! It sounds like an loose pivot but it is always hard to say without knife in hand. Please feel free to call us if you would like to send it back and we will take care of you! 800-800-7427.
