I noticed recently that there is a rattle on my BM 550 when the blade is closed and i shake it side to side. When i open the blade all the way then the rattle stops. Anyone have any ideas? should I return it to Benchmade to have them look at it or is it no big deal?

thanks

It's most likely the sleeve around the stop pin. They can get a little loose and cause a rattle. It goes away when the blade is open because the blade presses against it. There's no pressure on it when the blade is closed, so it can spin freely and rattle. My 942 has the same thing, and it's never caused any problems.

thanks for the help, it does make sense that the sleeve would stop rattling when the blade is open where as a broken spring would still rattle( i would think anyway) I emailed benchmade to see if they would know also.

You can also check the knife yourself to see if it's the stop pin sleeve. With the blade closed, shake the knife back and forth and see if it makes the rattling sound. Then, with the blade still closed, push against the stop pin with your index finger and shake the knife again. It shouldn't rattle. You can also do a search on axis lock rattle, as it is a topic that has come up here before.

Yeah thats what it is, I just tried putting my finger on the stop like you said and it quit rattling. no big deal i guess

I wouldn't sweat it at all. See what Benchmade says when they respond to your e-mail, but I don't think it's anything that needs to be fixed. If the noise bothers you, you could probably get some locktite or something in there, but I think the rotating sleeve may actually serve a functional purpose in that it moves and prevents flat spots from the blade always hitting the same part of the stop pin. Either that or it's a design flaw :D

Guess there is no particular reason for rattling stop pins, but agree, that it shouldn´t be a problem.

Fixing with glue is an idea. Or, if it doesn´t take to much money, follow BMs advices. Their warranty - repair dept. are real friendly and generous folks, especially their departement chief, Angie.

A toothpick and a small drop of blue Loctite will stop your ratteling stop pin. Put a drop on the toothpick and then let it slide down the stop pin and it will set up in the stop pin hole and solve the rattle.
