Axis lock - thumb, index, or both?

I just got a BM551 today, and I've been working the new lock so much the tips of my thumb and index are getting raw ;) I haven't decided on my favorite way to open and close it yet, though. I can pull the lock with either my thumb or index, but it's a lot easier (especially with sore fingers) to use both, but then I always feel like a mall-ninja when I flip the blade closed that way (or open) :p How do you all do it?

Just the thumb. I usually flick it open using the stud and swing it closed like you mentioned. I only feel mall ninja when I do it while wearing black spandex and special shoes that let me climb walls.

Both. I don't feel like it's mall ninja-ish. It's practical and convenient.

Both.
I feel like just using one or the other puts an uneven strain on the bar/spring. Probably won't notice a difference even over a Jillion flicks, but it makes me feel better.

yeah, I've worried a little about that too. I haven't heard of that actually happening, though; only time will tell.

I'm getting into the habit of using only the thumb to flip it closed, but I haven't decided what feels most natural for getting it out of my pocket and open. To be honest, a simple thumb circle works pretty well if I'm not in a big hurry. I guess that's the beauty of the axis lock - so many options  According to Benchmade's website, you're supposed to close it by pulling the lock with your thumb and pushing the blade closed with your index ;)

I sometimes flip my Axis knives open but prefer to open with the thumb on the stud. On closing these models I always adjust the pivot so I can flip it closed. But I often use my index finger to close the blade after pulling on the Axis bar - as I owned locking liners long before my first Axis came along, and old habits are hard to break...

It's an ambedextrious lock and was designed to be used with either or both fingers.

I pull the axis bar with both fingers to open and close axis locks. A small flick of the wrist takes care of the rest.

Once you work with it a while, opening with your thumb is easy enough. It's also very easy to use the pointer finger in concert with the thumb to help the blade start open, then open it the rest of the way with the thumb. As far as closing it, if you push the axis lock stud all the way to the bottom of the slot (it's easy if you use your thumbnail), gravity will close the knife without pushing or flipping.

I use both.
Usually use my thumb to open via the thumb stud.
I carry a large Rukus on right side and a small on the left.
I can easily open both at the same time, and close them simultaneously.
But it sure scares the SHEEPLE.:D

I also use my thumb and index finger to open (those nasty thumb studs get ground off) and the same for closing if I swing it, or just the thumb for closing manually.

Both for this very reason. The tension is uneven and it isn't nearly as smooth a pull with just one finger. Doubt it has any ill effect, but I do it because it feels better and puts my mind at ease.

Either thumb or index, depending on my mood, although I have much more consistent opening when I use my thumb. I think using my index changes the angle that I flip my wrist with. Screw the thumb stud... A quick tug and a small flick is what works for me. Of course this depends on who might be watching.

Edit to add you'll quickly get over the soreness when the newness wears off, then it will just be a couple of flicks everytime you pick it up.
