The stryker is one of my favorite designs, the old version more than the new. Something abot the new one to me just doesnt seem right and until now i couldnt figure it out. Its the thumb studs!!! The original has a thumb disk, which i thought went with the knife perfectly. So why do you think they would switch over to thumb studs instead of a disk, and which one would you prefer? Personally, im all for the thumb disk.

They basically just gave the Triage model a Strykeresque shaped blade and called it a day.

My guess was cost saving versus actually redesigning the old stryker with an Axis lock. Little bit of a shame.

Could be they did not want it to look like an Elishewitz knife anymore. The two parted company, but the stryker lived on, now "in name only". Mine is the auto version and I have had since year 2, and love it, but i always wanted a manual...

The old Stryker is a cool looking knife, thumb disc and liner lock and all. The new Axis Stryker is also cool looking and one of my top favorite knives in production from any company. And since the Triage handle was a modified Stryker handle, what you now have is.... a modified Stryker handle. Very comfortable. Thumb disc would have looked cool and retro -but then there would have undoubtedly been grumbling about how it's not necessary on an Axis knife and it is keeping somebody from "choking up" for "fine tasks" or "holding onto in hellicopter blade-pinch tsunami grip" ...or something :p

An Axis repro of the old one would have been cool but the new one is really good in its own right

I too am a big fan of the original 910 Stryker. Carried and used one for many years. Great knife on many levels.

I was very excited to see an AXIS Stryker finally offered after all these years but also slightly disappointed in some of the design changes that make it differ from the original. Not only the handle but a smaller blade with the thumb stud. That said, I'm still very pleased with the new versions. I got both the 909 & 908 and love them both.

I have one original 910 that I got a blade replacement for and all they had left were the 154CM blades with the thumb stud. I'm fine with that but would have preferred the thumb disk.

Back in the day when they first came out, and I think still true today, there's just something "ecstatically" more pleasing about the original 910 with the thumb disk.

Maybe the handle is too big for the blade size??
That's what I thought. Had it and sold it shortly after

The new Stryker shares the same handle with the Triage, which looks to be a recycled Rift style handle. It's those kind of changes that sort of ruined the new Strykers. People that had not handled or used the older ones don't have anything to compare the new ones to, other than other Benchmades. I'd also guess cost saving was a major factor.

It would be nice to have them both at hand to compare, they both are favorites ove mine that I want to give a try.

Thats too bad, but what made them part ways? I always thought times just changed so Benchmade just made room for new designs by discontinuing old ones.

I have no idea why they parted company. IIRC a few designers left the Benchmade stable at the same time. I believe Terzuola was one of them. With the Stryker, they took Elishewitz's name and logo off the blade. Usually when a designer leaves a knife company, the knife leaves too or stays with the same name/logo.

I prefer the old to new also. The 910 with the thumbdisk is great. Would rather have than almost any Emerson.

Regarding the Strykers; nothing beats my old 154CM 910, with thumb disk and all. The later 912/913 are great knives but aren't the same caliber. Old school rules.

I still haven't been able to score an old school Stryker so unfortunately I fall into the camp that loves the new version but only because I have nothing to compare it to.

Naturally, the olden days are are always best. What a handsome blade, old or new, though. It would be sweet to see some contemporary 910 EDC pics from you OGs. They never seem to pop up in this forum.

In the meantime, for the rest of us, I guess it's true what they say: ignorance is bliss!

Here is one of mine beside a Rift (really don't like that handle but love the 909). Same blade length but less tall:

Busted the tip off this one screwing down an irrigation clamp last summer :o

...Benchmade hooked up a sweet replacement in 2 weeks, though:

Still don't have a 908 but it is on the long list....

I'm going to have to take them all out for an updated family photo but here' a few.
Original 910 Prototype, 910, 910 Chisle Grind, and 910 with Thumb Stud instead of disk.

Wow, those look great. Can you do a side by side with the new Stryker?

*Edit to add: Fulfilled my own request. Here is a photo comparison of 909/910 made ~a month after initial post.

Thanks!

I'll try and do that at some point soon. What I meant by taking an updated family photo. Have to pull out the ones in storage to line up with the new 908 & 909 but I'll get to it.

Ahhh, gotcha. Guess I still need some caffeine this morning.
