I have several spyderco knives. Delica, Goddard, Jester and a Toad on order.
Until now, I have been more or less indifferent. I did like the Goddard a great deal, but still....

Today, I received My Ayoob. WOW. I love this knife. I new when I agreed to buy it it was going to be a love it or hate it situation. I love it.

Wanted to pop in and say thanks for the great design. Perhaps it will lead to even more. I have been drooling over a police and a chinook. Maybe now I will drop my reservations.

I love mine too. In fact, it's my favorite Spyderco, and in the top three of my all time favorite production knives.

Ed-

A Police was my first Spyderco (back in the late 80's), and I still have it. I never regretted buying it........

Ed T,

Get yourself a Chinook, ONLY if you want to be TOTALLY impressed with a very SOLID folder! I have a pair of 'em, and....WOW...My very favorite Spydie folder!!

From looking at picts of the Ayoob, I think one might be my next Spydie purchase, 'tho, as it looks like an excellent, unique design.

I think you will be pleased with the Ayoob. At first I thought the blade angle was bizarre, but I have done some simple cutting and it almost seems to require less force. Better ergonomics? As far as thrusting.. wow, again. Position seems to focus pressure.

Now, I am no expert. These are my initial impressions. Now that I think about it, the drop handle akes me think of some of the customs with stag horns that drop down.

The pennies are falling into the jar for a chinook. Pending one detail.

What's the type of lock on the Ayoob? Does it look like it would remain locked in the event of an accidental trhust into hard material?

thanks

Not sure just what they call this type of lock :o (I'm new around here :) )

I did the spine whack test with mine tonight and it passed.
It seem to be very solid.
As you can see from the photo the lock release is on top of the handle in the middle.
The release button has to be pressed about 2/3 of the way down befor the blade releases.

Glad you like the photo :)
I included some of my other interest in the photo, chess and coins.

This knife came very sharp, but I just could not leave it alone :)
I repofiled it on my black DMT and the put the razor edge clamps on and gave it a very fine edge.

What a joy! It really takes a edge nice and once again I have a hairless spot on my left arm.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the edge will hold up on the VG-10 steel.

Huh.

That's definitely the first time I've seen a silver Eagle used for scale in a knife photo :D

Think I'm gonna go photo all my knives with a Peace Dollar, just for kicks. Or maybe a three-cent piece, just to confuse people ;)

The Toad arrived today. Very cool little knife. i hope there is an antidote for the spyder virus.

CUSTOMS! :D

Seriously though...

I hate to sound like a 'party pooper' (hope I can avoid the flames),but...

I just can't stand the look of the Ayoob. It always looks like it isn't open all the way. I can't seem to get used to it. I almost bought one from Smoky Mtn. when they had them for $50. I just could not pull the trigger...no way. I would be so afraid it would snap shut on my and take off all four fingers-YIKES

and the Chinook? Let's just say I better shut up now :D

oh well, no one listens to a mongrel anyway....

:D

LOL
No flames.

That was the reason I knew it would be a love it or hate it.

It does lock and you cannot mistake it for not being locked.

The drop on the blade seems to make cutting a little easier. I don't know if this makes sense, but it is almost as if it increases the pressure applied to the point of contact. Also it really thrusts well.

I recommend getting a hold of one and playing with it a bit. It is odd, but infectious....

Of course this is coming from a guy who also loves the toad:D

editted to add:

I have also committed to buying a chinook from comtech. Will officially order it Friday. I can't seem to help myself!

I've been thinking about getting a Ayoob for a while. Finially got to play with on last month at a knife show...very nice knife. The pronounced angle of the blade is a little odd but, I'm sure you would get used to it. Might have to pick one up later as I have heard they are being discontinued.
