Hello,

I have been reading about the upcoming Spyderco-Ayoob collaboration and it seems very interesting.

Does anyone know when it will be available (here in Germany, possibly) and what its price will be?

It also supposedly features almite handles. Now I only own G-10 and steel handled knives, so I do not really know what to think about this. What exactly is almite (probably a very stupid newbie question, but I have not been able to find anything on this)? Does it scratch easily? How does it feel like?

Thanks for any answers,
Kris

Hi Grey Area,

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum. Here's the dirt on the C60.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. The C60 Massad Ayoob will come plain or SpyderEdged.
2. Blade is VG-10, deep bellied with and upswept point.
3. It has a radical angle of the handle to the blade. I talked with Massad Ayoob and he explains: "With a typical knife, thrusting lifts the blade's point above the line of the forearm, like a boat prow going through water. The faster, harder or more resistance encountered, the higher the prow rises. This deviates the blade off course from its original target, mitigating the depth of the cut and can cause the blade to literally 'skid' when a resistant surface is hit." The radical angle brings the blade into line with the long bones of the forearm, channeling the body's force directly behind the line of the puncture or the slash. This results in minimizing blade deviation and maximizing accuracy."
4. A David Boye style release lever.
5. Tip-down carry.
6. Aluminum handle coated in black Almite (a microscopically thin Teflon-like coating that provides scratch resistance and can be tinted any color).
7. Blade length is 3 5/8" (92mm) and overall weight is 4.3oz (122g).
8. Cost is around $170.00 USD.
9. We Expect them to be delivered sometime in January, then we ship them on to our dealers and distributors worldwide.
Have a cool Yule!
Thanks for that detailed explanation of the knife, Joyce. Will we be seeing several different colors of this knife then? What exactly is a "David Boye style release lever"? Thanks in advance for your help.
Thanks a lot for the explanations on almite and the details of the C60.
That "David Boye style release lever", does that refer to the "inward curve" (uh-oh, me and my german-english dictionary
) of the lever I have seen on pictures?
Thanks again for the quick replies,
Kris
When I first saw the Ayoob I had to scratch my head. This knife's only unique feature is the odd blade angle to handle. I just dont think its going to fly. Too many people like a knife to look like.......well a knife. I love spyderco knives in general, I just have gut feeling that this one is going to be sitting on the shelves more than most. Hope I am proven wrong. But it brings little new to the table but that odd handle angle.
Hello,
and this baby is alive and kicking !
And it's a Beauty !
This knife is a must try !
I mean, you need to handle it first.
Another excellent knife from Massad Ayoob.
IMHO of course, this is a real everyday carry knife
cheers,
JM
Hey Nemo I agree. You gotta hold this knife. It's kinda funny looking, most people say that when I show it to them but then they hold it and they get a whole different picture of the knife. It does become an extention of your arm. It makes so much sense.
I really hope this one flies.
IMO some of Spyderco's best designs have been the most radical, beginning with:
Civilian
Jot Singh Kalsa
Gunting
Chinnook
Massad Ayoob.
And I still think it's a real pity about the Kalsa. That was a GREAT knife, as are these other "extreme" knives
There is really no way to determine the success of a design going in.
We're not afraid to make a knife that is radical in conception. Sometimes they prove to be successful despite "early opinion".
Very few thought that our one hand opening knife with a clip (1981) would be successful.
Sometimes the model is successful for a small market.
At the very least, knife nuts get to "try" the new concept. Something they would not be able to do unless a company took the gamble to tool up and produce it.
Sal,
I personally love the fact that you'll make those "different" knives available to us. Good luck with the one designed by Mas (my shooting instructor during LFI I, II and III in '91 and a great guy) and all the other models, both old and new, conventional or "different".
