I thought I would see some comments about this story. While I.ve never camped in the SW I have for many years known about the dangers of thunderstorms and flash floods .
Things like 'never camp along streams' 'check weather for possible flash floods '. You have to assume responsibility for your safety and not to depend on the gov't in that remote area.

So true. An unfortunate reminder to be familiar with potential hazards one may encounter in the great outdoors. Situational awareness. A list should be compiled.
Hang your food up high and away from camp. Bears love to get cozy with humans and our food.

Have redundancy in fire making kits /tools.

We hiked into Havasu Falls about 6 years ago which is on a canyon off the Grand canyon with a small River running down it. We spent a dry (HOT) week there but we camped among the washed out tents, clothes, and backpacks of the last week's backpacks that had to leave everything as they ran from a flash flood. I believe someone died in the flood. It was very erie setting up 10 feet from a tent that was still set up and had been completely under water a few days ago...
