Azis wanted to try and create a new martial art based on the aspects of the khukuri. I was not supportive. I should have been.
I do appreciate his enthusiasm, I did even when he suggested it.
However, someome wanted to be creative and I wasn't totally supportive. I am sorry for that. I cherish artistic endeavor above so many other pursuits.
I have regret over this.
For what its worth, Im sorry.
I hope you DO create an all new martial art.
Chitlangi-Do, or something..

I've dismissed other people's ideas before too. I'm pretty sure we all have.

Isn't it human nature to say something can't be done.
And human nature to say I am going to do what cannot be done, and then do it.

What about Bando? I don't know too much about it, but they like kukris ... I read some of the old posts, where UB said, "if you have a question about bando, email me directly." Really makes me wonder what he knew about the art, and where he guided people to find their answers.

I personally like fighting sneaky. ;) I love the feel of a pair of kukris in a reverse grip. Seems very defensive oriented which would let you get inside and then do some damage.

I'm all ears, Azis ....

I am a little surprised by the thread, sort of out of nowhere..
But not really wanting to create a new art, but I have been doing and trying to refine the art I learned 20 some years ago. The art is based on the Khukuri not just how to fight with it but also a complete art that includes empty hand based on principals found within the dynamics of the Khukuri.
Having a background in martial arts I can understand both the principals and applications.

I have been in the arts since 1963 owned a couple of schools etc… I have been focused on this art since around 1982.

But it’s not my art, no one owns any art we can only share what we know, to do this artist must teach and learn with others.

so Danny thanks for the kind words, but no need...I have spent a long time doing this and have no plans on stopping now.

If there WAS a khukuri-oriented martial art, I'd be interested in learning about it. What existing ones lend itself to the K?

Ad Astra
(I swing a mean pair of nunchakus- and I know, because I usually hit myself)

Hollow tube with joints,;)
UB just happened to become acquainted with people in Bando because he was the very first one to promote the sale and use of real Nepalese Khukuri's.
UB wasn't skilled in any of the arts anymore than I or most of the other folk that happens on the Cantina.
UB was just a man, albeit a very special man, and UB said that very vehemently, at least privately, as much as anyone who seems to be made an icon of does.;) :D

<<Hollow tube with joints>>

I thought there were some Bando artist on the forum, if so maybe they could clear it up a bit.
When looking at the info from American bando it appears to be a mix of Yawara and Arnis.. That’s ok with me I have studied both arts and would really like to hook up with some Bando folk. However the word bando itself (Burmese boxing) just means martial art like the word karate or Kung-Fu it’s a generic word so it leaves a lot open as to the contents of any specific system.

I have tried to get more info on the American system but lately have found there is some dispute over the grandmaster or founder credentials… martial arts in styles vs style etc is as full of gossip, politics, attacks and controversy as Washington DC.

Bottom line in any art is can you fight…. Can you apply the principals of the art or not. Linage is always a major issue in martial art it maybe the biggest issue that is discussed. However if you think about it in a dark alley the mugger don’t care who studied under what master and if the forms were the right ones or not.

Apparently Bando practitioners are private about their art.
So UBE would pass on contact information to a friend in Bando.

Do a search for Bando in HI & HI archive here.

If I remember right, some of that disputing about the Bando guys credentials happened here several years ago. If not in the Cantina, then at least in bladeforums.

Sounds very interesting!
Keep us informed of developments.

I can think of a few blade-specific Filipino styles that khukuris (especially the longer ones) would be excellent in. :)

Absolutely, I use to own a kali school and was doing that at the time I found out about the Khukuri. It was amazing how easy it was to use it based on those methods and how it enhanced weapons use. I know a few Arnis and kali artist that now use Khuks adopted into in their system…over time I found there was still more.

Azis:

If you were in Ohio, I could give you names to "plug you in" to the Bando community. There is, or was some activity here in Ohio because Master Gyi was from this area (I think that is his name). I don't think there was ever any Bando being taught from storefronts here like most of the more popular martial arts. If you knew the right person and demonstrated a willingness to be a student, you were taught.

Do a search on USA Bando. Kevin is about 60 miles from me and teaches some knife work. Maybe he knows of some Bando practioners in Florida. Since I am nearing 50 and my knees and shoulders give me frequent problems, it is unlikely that I will be doing anything as vigorous as Bando again.

Jeff

There is a very skilled Bando practioner / teacher in Ft Pierce, Fl. He was / is taught by the the Master in Ohio.

When we trained together I felt the use of the khukuri is very "Chinese" in style. Arcs and hip movements.

The fighting hand technique is more of the "hard style",[Karate] not the "internal styles" ie Paukai, Tai Chi Chuan, etc.

I hope this info helps a bit.

I plan on going to the knife makers guild show in orlando...I will be meeting a few members of a Kung-Fu forum to hang out exchange things etc maybe this could work into some sort of 1/2 day workshop as there are a few of them that are interested and maybe someone from here?
