I've just received this nice red jigged bone congress knife from H. Böker:

It's a very nice knife with strong snap, no wobble and half stops, but there's also something odd about it, the point of the two sheepsfoot blades sticks out of the knife while closed. You can't see it when all the blades are closed, but when the penknife and coping blade are folded out, you can see it:

What do you think about this, is it normal, or is this a factory mistake and should i dremel away the tangs a bit? (i must say it doesn't really seem to be annoying when you use the knife and it's my first congress so i don't know how it's supposed to be)

I just received a congress like yours except mine has the washboard handles and has king kutter etched on one of the blades. Walk and talk are just as you described and it even has the sheepsfoot blade points above the handles like yours. Have been thinking of grinding the kicks down just a bit to let the handle swallow the blades a little more. IF I get to it...until then, I'll just use it and check it out as I have never had a congress before either. (BTW- nice knife)

I carry a Boker Congress quite a bit (celluloid of some ilk) and the tips do not protrude on mine. It has been a great knife.

I usually grind the kicks down to make slipjoints as compact as possible, and still be able to access the nail nick and have the blade not hit the backspring.

But that is me, the knife is no longer "mint" and I don't care. :)

If it was my knife I would grind the kick. Do so at your own risk. I am no expert.

Eric.

If the point isn't exposed with just one blade open (any one), I wouldn't worry about it. You'll never use more than one blade at a time, right? YMMV

great looking knife.

I wouldn't like that blade sticking up like that ether.

Never more than one blade at a time? You haven't seen my folksy ninja "Four-blade-palm-exploding-heart-technique" then :D

No, I've never actually seen it before. I thought that one was only a myth, something called "it hurts me more than it hurts you"! LOL

below are pics of my Boker Four Trees congress in stag and it too is a beautiful solid knife. blade configuration is different from knife in question, but tip of large pen blade is expopsed in closed position. i don't see this as a problem or defect. the only "problem" is, it is too nice to use. roland

Here is an early 1970s version of the same knife. On this one, the tips of the blades are not exposed when closed.

LMAO

This is the most precious souvenir i have from the great folksy ninja master (not shaolin, this is not tv dude ;))that teached me the way of the four blades:

@rprocter: really nice Böker! I think i should leave mine the way it is. But too beautiful to be used? Maybe, but it's also too beautiful not to be used...

Well, there ya go. Now I gotta show off my Boker congress.

Boker-Longshield-Stag-Congr.jpg

It is a nice knife. I would have no problem carrying it, except that with the stag, it's a bit heavy in the pocket. Same as most of my stag slippies.

Now to the point. The sheepsfoot blade facing does have the tip above the frame a little. The back one just barely takes the tip below frame level. This knife was a replacement from Boker USA for a smaller congress that had weak springs.

Oh, I am very excited as I have JUST ordered a boker larger congress with the drop point, sheepsfoot, pen and coping. I plan to carry if often.

Glad to hear it's a popular knife and folks seem to like it.

Love the shaolin by the way. I laughed til my belly hurt.

Take care,
Brett

Anybody have experience with Böker's Double Tree? They seem more costly, so I assume the fit is better? Wouldn't think the tip of the blade SHOULD be protruding on your knife though.

Pleased with my Grand Canyon Copperhead, bit heavy in the pocket perhaps.

I don't have a Double tree knife so can't coment. I do have redbone and grand canyon though. Generally quite nice for the money but a little blade rub.

I think you're generally asking for blade rub on congresses, especially the small ones. Just too many d__n blades to fit in a small space. But they are awesome. might have to get a new appaloosa bone one.

Well, I got my delrin large congress today and I really like it. It wasn't real sharp out of the box, but it wasn't too bad.
I think it will work great for whittling just every day carry. Anyone know what steel it is?

Thanks,
Brett
