How many of you "Bring Your Own Blade" when you go someplace that you know you will be asked to help out in the kitchen?

I've gotten in the habit of taking one or two kitchen knives I made to my mother in law's house. I know that I will usually end up helping do some food prep. She has these stainless steel serrated "Ginsu" type knives. I will confess that my wife and I gave them to her because I knew that she doesn't take care of her knives. These at least be better than a butter knife. So more than 10 years later..... she still has them.

So on Christmas day, I was using one of my knives. She asked my why I didn't use a bigger knife. I was nice and just told her that I don't like serrated knives. My daughter looked at me and snickered under her breath.

PS In the past, I've been at friend's houses and had to sharpen their knives on the cement curb because they were so dull (no sharpening stone available). Couldn't shave hair, but it was sharper...

Whenever I know I'm going to be cutting food at work, I always bring my five inch Wusthof cook's and a cutting board despite us having knives (serrated, "Nev-R-Sharpen" type) and cutting boards (glass, argh!) Clamped in a blade guard, it's a pretty good picnic knife.

You'd have to check with Miss Manners, but if it were up to me, I'd wager it might be considered rude to bring your own knives if the host is expecting you to use his or hers, especially if they're proud of their crappy knives. You may be able to circumvent faux pas by claiming that you don't want to risk damaging their "fine cutlery" and instead offer to use your "old beaters".

If it's family, however, I don't think they're allowed to care.

Many times my Spyderco Police saved the day in situations where food was served. There was no knife anywhere when it was time for my mother's 80th birthday party when it was cake cutting time. Same thing will happen when she reaches her 90th I'm sure.

There was no knife available at some of our workplace parties when we celebrated retirements, so good old Spyderco came to the rescue again.

And the list goes on and on when I think of unexpected food deliveries from the late night pizzas coming into visits with friends and families, in homes or at the picnic tables over the years.
