BA III handle question

Hi Everyone,

I just picked up a BA III with the straight handle from someone on the forum. I've been comparing it to some of the pictures here and I noticed that the BA III I have doesn't have the rear talon hole.

Did Busse make any BA III's without the rear talon hole ? Everything else about mine looks exactly like the ones here - same crinkle coating, 4 inch blade, 3/16th blade thickness but it came with a leather sheath. I hope I have an original. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. Thanks.

Not to worry, rear talon holes were eliminated on the BA's some time back partially for upside down use in skinning. If you go to Bad Mojo and look at the BA section Jerrys explaniation for this is in there. It started with the BA-E's.

Badger Attack Trivia:

The rear talon hole was left off for three reasons:

1.) It allows for more concealable or easy day-to-day carry due to its shorter length.

2.) The Badger Attack has been one of our most popular knives to be employed as a big game hunter. (Elk, Caribou, Bear, etc. . .) In order to facilitate this application where the knife will be used in an upside down fashion for a good period of time, it became obvious that the rear talon was going to be in the way, thus the removal.

3.) It is very difficult to chop with a short blade. The removal of the rear talon allows for comfortable "choking back" on the handle so that you can employ a 3-finger grip (no pinky) and you can achieve very impressive chopping results with this blade. This "choking back" simply lengthens the knife and offers a better "chopping balance" point.

As for losing the advantage of the rear talon hole for lanyard purposes, I think that you'll be more than pleasantly surprised as to how comfortable the knife still feels with the lanyard run through the rear tube flange. We have even attached a cord-braided D-guard to the BAE using the front talon hole and rear flange.

Hope this helps,
Jerry Busse

I dont wanna disagree but both BA3's I had a while back both had rear lanyard holes. Heres a pic of mine, and I am working with one right now and its got one too. Is this something that was eliminated and I didnt hear about it? All I've seen of them has the hole, even the Anorexic's.

all of my ba-3's have a rear talon hole.
does the tang and butt have the crinkle coat?
sounds like you may have a rare and elusive assless badger.
pics, man!

The BA-e's did not have the rear talon hole, the BA3's did. Of course it could have been a special order, I've seen some SJ's like this. They were specifically ordered with the rear talon hole ground off. I would also like to see some pics, but in all honesty the only person that will be able to tell you if it is original(no rear talon hole) is Jerry. I doubt that you have an outright fake, but it may have been altered since after it left the factory.

If it was ground off at the shop, it may or may not increase the price of this knife. If it was ground off after it left the shop, it most likely decreased the value of this knife.

I hope this helps

:D:D

I have an ABLE that I ordered from Busse with the rear metal ground off flush with the handle. The result was as nice a little drop point hunter as you ever saw. Makes the drop point hunter I had previously used with contentment feel clumsy and unwieldy. It is amazing what removing that very small amount of metal did for the feel of the knife.

My BA3 was sent back to Busse to have the tang ground flush with the handle slabs all the way around. While it was there I also had them give it a symetrical edge and penetrator tip. It has become my favorite Busse for EDC.It makes for a sweet combination. ;)

Dang! Dwayne, you're right! My DAB does have the talon hole. However I am a big fan of the 'Butt Grind' (Shaggi's words) as 2 of my NO's have it. 1 from the shop (military) and one done elsewhere. I can really see my ZTNO, SJ, and the DAB benefitting from this. It does make for more concealed and comfortable carry. Can't see it on the larger blades though.

Can someone help me post a few pictures of my BA III with the leather sheath. I can email them to someone.

It looks exactly like all the other ones here except for the missing rear talon hole. Maybe it is one made by an apprentice ? Thanks.

Of the two BA3s I own, both have the "tail". I do, however, have a couple of other Busses that "should" have a "tail" but that I requested be ground off. Rob and Mike are correct when they say that the balance changes tremendously and, in my opinion, for the better.

If your BA3 is coated all around, I would venture that it was modified at the shop and is not a "homespun" job.

would a ba3 with no rear talon hole be like a public defender handle? i love the pd handle

Not to totally hijack the thread, but which 'others' of yours have the butt grind? For me, I think my SJ would be at the top of the list. For my style of carry, losing that tail would not only save my ribs but also improve the balance. There are others as well, but that would be the first.

My Tanker A is probably the one that I like best without the tail. I have others but that is the one that strikes me as the best modification. I also think that a ABLE with out the tail would be just about the perfect drop point hunter.

That makes my mouth water Les. I still haven't been able to scoop a Tanker A, much less a tailless one. Sounds really schweet.

Send it South for the winter????? Keep it warm? That is, if I'm still here after this weekend. OMG I hope it's not a repeat of the Labor Day hurricane. It looks bad, and this is from a native who's seen 50+ yrs of them.

I will likely be sending it south for the winter but I doubt that it'll be travelling that far south. ;)

As for that 'Cane... good luck brother. I hope we find you and yours well on the "other" side of it.

wh- yup, checked a bunch; sj, ba3, gm, pd.
the only significant difference is the butt.
