Baby bug out bag: What is in yours?

Well my missus is 6 months pregnant. Being the kind of guy that I am, I don't want to use a double wide RV sized stroller. It seriously irritates me when a group of moms go into a grocery store or coffee shop and park their strollers in the walkways.

I've seen people with newborns, a baby sling and a backpack. This allows them to have two hands to do stuff, and not carry 1000's items with them. This seems like it would be for me. I don't want it to take me 45 minutes just to get out the house, which I am told is the average time it takes to leave with a small child. I want a 'baby bag' where I have the bare essentials in a small to medium sized bag. All I need to do is grab the bag, the baby and go.

What do you seasoned parents think is absolutely necessary to bring with, and what is a waste of space that a lot of people bring.

Cheers!

The absolute necessities include food, diapers, wipes and a change of clothes. Depending on the child and whats going on with he or she at the time you may need pacifiers, teething rings, diaper rash cream etc. I'm with you on this. I pre-pack the bag and can leave the house in 15minutes with a 2 year old and a 6 month old.

Cool. Could you post a pic of your bag, so's I can see mostly what you bring?

For an infant...
1. diapers
2. baby wipes.
3. pacifier wipes.
4. hand sanitizer.
5. disposable changing pads.
6. backup onsie and sleeper.
7.backup Binky/pacifier.
8. rattle/toys
9. ointment/paste.
10. small flashlight.
There, I know it's not exciting..... but this is your basic load out.

Change of clothes for baby and spare shirt for you. Nothing worse than being covered in spit up milk, it will sour late in the day.

This is a suggestion I make to a lot of new tactical dads. Buy a bag you can use after it serves its diaper bag purpose. You'll obviously want your own man bag, but stay away from the stupid ones they sell at the baby stores. Check out Maxpedition... Either a Versipack or the Mongo if you want something bigger. You'll spend a little more but you'll have something you'll use even when the kids get older. I made this mistake but have a Versipack EDC on the way.

My kids are 3 years and 10 months. I don't carry all the stuff you do when your first is an infant; however, I always have a Glock or Ruger LCP, knife and flashlight. Consider a tactical style backpack as well.... You'll get more room and you'll 100 percent use it again and is good for trips like the zoo etc.

Things I carry:
2 diapers... For a short trip you don't need any more.
Wipes
Snacks items
Simple small onsie as a change of clothes.... Save space... Don't need a fancy outfit
Pacifier
Diaper trash bag
Medical style changing pad... Get them from the hospital while you're there... Take up little space, disposable and space saving.
There are other things... But a lot of them are child and age dependant

I rarely carry a bag for short trips into stores, I just put a diaper, a couple of wipes, a burp cloth, and a pacifier in my pocket.

Leave the big bag in the car. Although for your first few months (especially if this is your first) you wife will bring half the baby room with her and there really won't be much you can do about it. Just smile and say "yes dear".

Always keep a fresh shirt close by, first its vomit and then they'll cover you in drool.

A manly bag is all good. On the other hand a baby store's diaper bag will not be inviting a break in, if you need to leave it in the car. You will want to have a tubberware shoe box with one or two onesies, a package of wipes, as much diapers as it will hold and a tube of cream in each of your car. A larger box will allow a blanket, warmer clothes and a fresh tshirt for you.
