I just purchased the set of 10 Opinels and am wondering if people could share their uses of the various sized knives, esp. what do people do with the tiny knives #2,3,4? Which are your favorites?

My personal favorite Opinels are the 6 and 7. I don't know why, but I have always wanted one of the baby Opinels, but I never seem to get around to actually buying one.

I like the #8 Garden Knife with the spear-point blade:

The tiny ones? They might make nice desk knives. You don't want or need much blade to open a package.

Smaller Opinels are still highly useful and worth having, nice food prep knives in an office environment.

I favor the number 7 and 8's for pocket duty. The small ones make good keychain knives, or as mentioned, desk top knives. Opening first class mail and occasional packages don't require a very large blade.

Give the wood handles a light coat of Helmsman Spar Urathane, even down inside the blade slot, and around the bladepivot. Then lube the blade pivot area with a very light film of vasoline put on with the end of a paper match. That will go a very long way toward waterproofing them.

+1 with MikeJackmin - I really like the spear-point blade of the #8 garden knife.

IMHO - a bit more practical and controlable vs. the standard Opinel blade shape.

Regards,
Mike

Got a number 2 on my keychain. Useful for all those small jobs, opening packages and so on. Looks "cute" as well, and all the other NKP related stuff. Another thing, I may forget to carry a knife, but I've never forgotten to carry my keys.

BTW, the fact that it has no lock isn't a problem, I've never had it open by accident, the construction and the blade's lightness take care of that.

I do like that spear-point. In fact, I wanted to modify the tips and I wouldn't have thought of that as and option-Thanks.

Yes, they are cute!:)
Any possibility of a pic? To see how you hooked it up to go on the key chain?
Does the #2 get through airport security when it is on you key chain like that?:D

This sounds like a very good idea! Do you suggest applying with a brush or spray?

Note how the writing on the handle has pretty much rubbed off. Maybe a year and a half old? Can't actually remember.

So far, never had to test whether it goes through security. That said, it's cheap, so if I do have to dump it, it's easily replaceable.

My neighbour bought one of those mini opinels , last time I saw it the tip was missing - yes , his wife apparently used it to pry with .

I couldnt believe it. How hard up would you be to try and pry something with a thin blade like that.Amazing.

Nicely done! Thanks. That looks like something I could do!:) I was thinking the same thing about air port security: if they confiscated the little knife I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

mp510 (and others): do any of you use the knife for food, food prep? The knives cut things so easily that I'm tempted to use them in the kitchen but have reservations about the sanitary aspect; it doesn't seem that the knives can be cleaned very well. Meats would be out the question I assume.

In general, what's the best way to clean the knives since they are prone to swelling when exposed to water? ( though that may not be an issue with jacknife's Helsman treatment.)
