Over the past couple of months, i have been looking around for a nice location within 50 km of my house to build a camp that i can go to on my weekends and such to escape the concrete jungle of gas plants, big cities, traffic and everything else that big city life represents.
I have moved out of edmonton, alberta for that exact reason. At 2 am i could hear the gas venting alarms at some of the refineries and gas plants...drove me crazy coming from a much smaller logging town in BC.
I found a nice place that is off the grid enough that i dont get bothered by anyone but its within my 50 km radius that i wanted of my home, so i built a lean too with a nice raised bed, cleared an area for the fire pit/cooking area and all of it is within 100 yards of a nice river. perfect.
iIfollowed an old quad trail that was full off moose and elk tracks to the general area of my camp and then i am nearly 1km off the quad trail.
this is the quad trail in.
Before i left i packed some bacon, bannock mix and this portabella mushroom..it has boursin cheese and pepper/roasted garlic spice on it wrapped in foil.
After a quick 1 hr hike, i was at camp...I hung some poly over the front of the lean too and have plans to install a heat reflective sheet on the inside of the roof to reflect heat from the fire.
Here is a shot from a bit further away with the flash off.
I'm sure you all have notices the extra bracing i put on the lean too...this is so the roof can handle the winter snowfall we get here...Here is a picture of the back side of the shelter.
Here is a picture of the inside.
Once i settled in for the day i went down to the river and threw in a fishing line that i had rigged with a bell weight that was about 6 feet from the baited hook...i threw it in the water, tied it to a dead tree and headed back to camp...The fishing rig i threw in as you might have guessed is designed so the bait floates in the water and moves with the current while the weight keeps it from drifting downstream.
Next, i gathered some firewood and birch bark shavings to get the fire going.
The firesteel in this picture is on its second ferro rod..
I got to try out my brand new fallkniven A2 as well...excellent piece of kit.
Just a quick blast from the firesteel set the birchbark on fire.
With the fire going i cooked my food and made some mint/spruce needle tea.
Naturally, i ate the bacon first LOL but here was the rest of my meal...an absolute treat.
After dinner i cut some firewood for the next time i was there and stashed it in the lean too so it would be dry..I have some work to do to camp before winter gets here.I want to put a tarp over the roof so the snow slides off and doesnt get infused into the spruce boughs, i also have to add more boughs to the bed as the last time i camped there overnight i flattened them out pretty bad.
Having a camp like this is nice...you have a retreat to go to and just relax...leaving all of the noise, concrete and population behind you..returning to how we are all supposed to truly live our lives...off the grid and from the land.
I will post some pictures of the lean too as i was building it this afternoon. I have not uploaded them yet.
Its nice to be back, posting pictures and sharing stories with all of you. Stay safe and get out there!
