Hello everyone! I'm not sure if some of you remember me or not but its been awhile since I've been on here lol. Over the last year and a half I've been working up in north/northwest Arkansas as a climbing instructor and activity guide. I've got to do tons and tons of climbing, met some awesome people, and have had some pretty cool adventures! Its been a pretty awesome break/gap year but I am back at home in TX and its time for me to blow off the dust in the shop and get back to it!

With that said... I am in search of a new grinder. For your information I am currently using a 2x42 Palmgren for all of my work so far and I hate it lol. I'm ready to spend the $$$ and get something a lot nicer and more efficient. I believe that I've narrowed it down to either a Ameriblade or a KMG-TX but feel free to give other recommendations. Now a little background about my set up, currently I do not have a 220 outlet available in my shop but I was looking at getting a quote from an electrician Monday about that possibility.

So here's the deal. I like both grinders and tbh I don't think I can go wrong with either one. The main dilemma I have right now is not having a 220 outlet available to me to use, with that said, this is my argument for getting the KMG-TX 2HP since they advertise that it is 2HP ready on either 110v or 220v outlets? Am I correct? I like the idea of just being able to plug and play. On the other hand Ameriblade sells their 1.5HP machines with the ability to be rewired to accept 220v and therefore bump up the HP to 2HP! I don't know how big of an ordeal it is to rewire a motor/VFD but it seems doable? Would I be satisfied with a 1.5HP machine? I am afraid of it bogging down. I do like the Ameriblade products since the seem to have a lot of the attachments that I am already looking for that come with the Mastery package that is about the same price as the KMG-TX with just the grinder itself. However, I am a fan of the KMG-TX because of the fact that it has a rachet belt tensioner vs the spring tension system on the Ameriblade. Adding convexity to some blades is a must for me and I believe that having a rachet belt tensioner that keeps it tight makes grinding on the slack belt easier???

There's my argument and I would appreciate any feedback! Thank you in advance!

You won’t get 2hp of output on 110, it pretty much always drops it to 1.5-1.75 depending on the motor. I’ve been very happy with my brodbeck, it’s extremely versatile and the customer service is fantastic.

I spoke to Northridge a couple of months ago and they said they weren't making grinders until the Fall. I called a couple of weeks ago and they said they now got a big contract, so wouldn't make any grinders until next year. Their grinder looks very nice but it may be a while before it is available.

Recently grinders were discussed in this thread: Yes, yet another grinder thread ...

Dang, that's a bummer. I was reading over the "yet another grinder thread" and I have to say that the Reeder grinders that are mentioned have definitely caught my eye! I am obviously new to the 2x72 world but can motors wired for 1.5V always be rewired later on for 220V to step up to 2HP? Currently I feel that Reeder is on the top of my list now over Ameribrade and KMG but I am still continuinug to look around!

A lot of motors can be reworked for 220v but always best to ask the manufacturer. Most will use a 2hp 3ph motor with a vfd and step it down to 110v and 1.5hp so it can often be as simple as changing the cord

You don't "re-wire the motor" You merely switch the input to the VFD from 110V to 220V. The motor is already a 220V motor. The VFD converts the 110V to 220V three phase. The derating of the 2HP motor to 1.5HP is because of the loss in conversion. Once you switch to 220V input you will get 2HP from the 2HP motor.

Ok I see. Simpler than I thought!
