Back from a knifeless vacation.

Just got back from vacation in England. It was an amazing trip, but the knife laws there are ridiculous. Other than SAKs, I don't think I even own any knives that are legal to carry there. Since I couldn't check bags on the outbound leg I couldn't even bring a SAK, much less any of my Kershaws. :(
Can't tell you how many times I reached for a knife that wasn't there.

Its sad that a country that has such a rich history of edged weapons and knives, has such draconian knife laws. Any UK Kershaw owners out there? Do you just carry them at home, or what?

In any case, I spent some quality time flipping my 301, Random Leek, and Blur as soon as I got home. I'll probably have to spend a few hours playing with the rest of my Kershaws to recover from the withdrawal. I tried to check in with the Kershaw Forum while I was gone, but it was intermittent at best.

Now that the Tyrades are shipping I really need to order one (that would certainly help with the withdrawal), but I'll have to see how far this vacation has put me in debt first.

Glad to be back on the Forum!

Ohmegawsh....I couldn't even imagine that. I've ran off to work in a hurry and left my knife behind. Tiss not a pleasant experience at all.

Welcome back from your vacation. :)

Thanks.

Knife-less at work is a pretty bad. I've done that once or twice too.

You really don't realize how often you use your knife until you don't have it with you.

knifeless work... oh don't get me started. It just started at our work. A new guy that is against all things pointy and sharp, including xacto blades.

Have you asked him why he is afraid of knives? I can't imagine not being able to carry my Cyclones everywhere I go on a daily basis..

Sitting here at my desk reading this, several items come to mind that can be pointy and sharp. My Fiskars scissors, staple puller, BIC pens, Mini Mojo (oh, wait, that doesn't count!), letter opener, metal ruler, etc...

Have fun with the idea...Embrace the concept! Take your Sharpmaker into the office, and during lunch put an edge on your letter opener! Or perhaps an industrial 110VAC powered stapler? A bandoleer sheath for your scissors? A Speedloader belt case could tote your staple puller around.

I could drive this guy nuts within one week, and have a blast doing it!

I believe I'd have to UPS or mail a knife to where I was going to be.

I'm the guy you see at baggage claim getting his pocket knife out of checked baggage so I won't lose my balance.

Of course I could use that as justification for buying another knife. They do still have them in UK, don't they?

I'd be visiting at least one walking stick maker or wood carver if I were there and it'd be embarassing to be with out a knife in such company.

Thanks.

Amen to that. You can really wear a hole in your pants reaching
for a knife that isn't there. Whats worse then that is when you get
to work, reach for your knife and go into a state of panic wondering
if you forgot it are  lost it!!

For basic carry in the UK, the knife has to be a non-locking, folding blade, of 3.0 inches or less. I suspect that assisted openers like Kershaw's Speedsafe knives would be unacceptable. Even if assisted openers were OK, I can't think of any that don't have locking blades.

To carry larger blades, you need "reasonable cause", like a hunter carrying a fixed blade hunting knife while actually hunting, etc.

I considered buying a knife there, but the dollar is so weak, I would have pretty much been paying double for any knife I bought, and to be honest there are still too many Kershaws I need to buy.

I know that UPS and Fed Ex would not be reasonable options for shipping a knife for carry to the UK, just too darned expensive. Mail might be reasonable though.

Thanks Offsetlover. It is good to be back, though other than the knife thing I definitely wouldn't have minded staying a while longer.
