Hey all!

This being my first post, I thought I would start with a knife I am very stoked about!

My wife and I were just in France for 2 weeks where we ended up spending a couple days staying with a family on their farm in the area of Aveyron, and all the men had their traditional Laguiole knives and were extremely proud of them. Well naturally I couldn't leave without getting my own, and since we were heading to St-Emilion in just a couple days, I decided I would get mine from Laguiole en Aubrac, where the fellow builds them right there in his little shop.

The guy was great and showed me a whole bunch of different styles, patterns etc, and in the end I went with the traditional farmers knife with the corkscrew and piercer with the juniper handle. It cost 149 euro but is well worth it! The feel and smell of the juniper is amazing and the knife fit my hand wonderfully. I can't wait until our next trip back now. I am going to take my son so he can pick out his own pocket knife and I will add another to my collection!

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy my bad cell phone pics... haha!

Beautiful knife! I think I will look into one of these beauties. Thanks for the post.

Nice one! I love the smell of juniper. I've got a Fontenille Pataud with a juniper handle.

Do you know if they make any laguioles with a carbon blade? As far as I know, they do not, but having been there you may know better.

They do make in carbon I believe it's C-75, congrats on the Laguiole en Aubrac, I have the same one that I picked up in France about 12 years ago and the juniper is still as fragrant as it was when I got it. The notches on the back side of the knife blade is the signature if the the cutler that made the knife from the beginning to end.
This is the only copy of the chart I have in my photo archive.

I like your bolsters better than the brass ones I have on mine.

Great looking Laguiole an Aubrac.

Somehow, these knives fascinate me.

Thanks for showing... :)

Kind regards

I believe that there are carbon options, but maybe not all makers use it. I am not 100% certain though. I was so overwhelmed by the awesomeness while in the shop I didn't even pose that most basic of questions! I was focused on the styles I think... Haha! I do know one of the brothers on the farm I was at showed me his old one that is carbon steel. Mine is the 12C27 Sandvik steel.

Also found this pic my wife took of me with the maker and my knife...

Nice! I have a Nontron with a Juniper handle and I love the fragrance of the wood. It's neat that you were able to buy the knife from the shop where it is made!

The French have a long and impressive tradition in cutlery. Very good pictures you show, thanks.

I know that some Fontenille-Pataud knives are available in carbon, check their website options. Very high quality finish with a mass of handle choices.

That was probably one of the coolest things! Getting it right from the man who made it was awesome... It is the best souvenir of our trip I could have hoped for!

Thanks! Even though I chose the brushed stainless bolsters, I was actually quite taken by the brass as well and the next one I buy given the chance, I will probably opt for the brass.

Nice knife you have there as well! :)

Hi, and welcome to the coolest section of BF :)

I always loved Laguioles, they look so classy, and they also look familiar (I've seen many of them, and they're not too different from Sardinian traditionals as well). If they made smaller versions, I'd surely have and carry one alot.
You were smart not to miss the chance of buying the knife where it's made. Yes there are some Laguioles made in carbon steel as well, and I love the wide choice of wooden handles...

You ARE the "kid in a candy store"! What a thrill this must have been.

Great knife, and experience too, congrats!

Funny this post happened today, as I've been researching Laguiole knives, and am looking at a few specific French cutlers including Laguiole en Aubrac, Fontenille-Pataud, Forge de Laguiole, and Laguiole Honore-Durand.

I can't make up my mind :D

awesome buy there -- I've been a fan of the laguiole pattern for years, but have yet to find the right one at the same time I have the available funds. :)
sounds like a great trip, now every time you use the knife you'll be reminded of it.

That thing is a beauty. I've always wanted one of these and your new purchase has inspired me to make a purchase. :D
